Since #wipwednesday is a thing and spamming my twitter tl, I got nostalgic and went back deep into my wip archives. Most of it ain't good, but some are... 👀 thoughts... might dust off and continue...

Anyway, this is an AU where Ryuji never became a Phantom Thief. (But he still matters, he matters so much)

p5s got me into the mood to look at old WIPs, so here, a very indulgent snippet told from mama sakamoto’s POV pre-P5 :’)

She woke up, once, to Ryuji crying.

He clung to her shirtfront, the tears wet and cold, small hands shaking.

“Ryu…? What’s wrong?” She asked, blinking past the sleep. The room was dark, only lit by slivers of moonlight bypassing the blinds, but his face was clear in the shadows, cheeks shining and eyes wide as he pulled back. He was silent, expression so terrified, the fear in her grew. “Baby, what’s wrong? Are you hurt?”

“You wouldn’t wake up.”

Ryuji had grown a bit, Masami noted, as his gangly limbs went everywhere, and inwardly she grieved at the fact that her baby was growing faster than she could keep up; she tucked his head in the crook of her neck, and listened to him cry, little noises escaping him that she hadn’t heard in years.

She froze, thrown off by the odd admission, but Ryuji curled closer, going on in wobbling exhales.

“You wouldn’t wake up, and I called for you-- I tried to get you out, Mom, I promise, I didn’t want to leave you behind, but you were stuck in the coffin and I couldn’t get you out-- and you didn’t answer back--” He broke off, a sob loud in his throat, and Masami quickly pulled him in, instinct more than reason driving her to comfort him. 

“Shh,” she whispered, rubbing circles on his back, “I’m here, it’s okay, it’s just a nightmare, Ryu. I’m here, it’ll be okay, I promise.”

His sobs slowly died into quiet hiccups, and they stayed like that, curled around each other until dawn broke through the blinds. 

She’d ask him, sometimes, a passing thought, if he’d remember having nightmares, and he’d give her an unreadable look before answering, “No.”

But she never forgot that after that incident, Ryuji became more protective at night, his eyes tracking the moon when it came close to being full, the light shining oddly on his face through the blinds.
