Datz took a deep breath and heaved a long sigh while he held Apollo (and received a weak hug in return), until his presence drowned out the racing thoughts of losing him and eased the heartache of worrying. He gave him an extra little squeeze before letting go and sinking into the chair next to the bed, continuing to rest a hand on his shoulder.

“I know, AJ,” he said gently, wondering if the kid had scared himself, too. In his experience, dashing into harm’s way to help someone was rarely a conscious, much less a logical or well-thought-out, decision. “But I’ve got way more practice getting hurt than you do, and I’da come outta that a lot cleaner.”

“What you did was real stupid, kiddo. I ain’t gonna pretend I’m happy about it... I’m just glad it didn’t kill ya.” His brow furrowed, betraying a more cluttered emotional state than his measured words let on. “You’re-- you’re important, alright? To me, and Yuty, and the whole dang country.” And to Dhurke. “You got a big job. You gotta play it smarter than that.”

Well aware that any lecture coming out of his mouth would be stale, he didn’t push it any further. He’d just have to keep a closer eye on him next time.

“Leave bein’ stupid to the pros, okay? I worry aboutcha enough as it is.” He forced a small, jokey smile and fondly mussed the lawyer’s hair. “How’re ya feelin’? Ready for a good nap, I bet!”
