As long as my current garden is a sepia brown colored mess you have to put up with me going to my archives and pulling photos from there. Because honestly, who wants to look at frost damaged plants on Instagram in spring? Certainly not me especially since I have this sight every day when I open my front door! So today I found a photo of a hybrid tea rose called ‘Moonstone’ for you that I grew in my old garden in San Diego. It was one of the few hybrid tea roses that I could grow organically on its own roots with a no spray regimen that bloomed willingly and profusely. Something which I probably can only dream of in the challenging climate of Austin that I live and garden in now. I love the elegant, big, ivory-white blooms with the pink edged petals of this rose. Sadly, it doesn’t have any scent to my nose. Back to my garden in Austin, upon closer inspection yesterday, I can now say with certainty that I didn’t loose any of my seven roses to the arctic blast. Phew! All are leaving out nicely, some are more vigorously than others, but they all made it and are waiting to be fed the first time in the season. That shows again how resilient roses are! My roses are pruned and deleaved and these were the last ones that I cut and brought in to enjoy in the house. They reminded me why I love growing my own roses so much. The variety is called ‘Bewitched’ and it is one of my very best Hybrid Tea roses. The blooms are humongous and so, so fragrant, and the form is always perfection. I am so longing for more white in our house, and if I would have my way today, I would paint the whole interior a nice warm off-white. But that is easier said than done, especially when the dining and living room ceilings are two stories high. It is a quite costly affaire that needs to be well thought through before execution. So for now I at least got my husband and I off-white roses to celebrate the New Year with. But I keep dreaming about an all white House. Hopefully next year! Do you have any dreams for the next year? The beauty and elegance of a well grown Hybrid Tea Rose is hardly surpassed by anything and always stops me in my tracks. This is rosa ‘New Zealand’, an outstanding light pink Hybrid Tea with salmon-pink undertones bred by McGredy IV (New, Zealand, 1985). The flowers are big with an average diameter of 6”/15 cm and they come in the so coveted high-centered bloom form. The rose has a wonderful strong Old Rose fragrance.
