Ancient Greek Hydria, ca. 450 BC The British Museum, London
The Ransom of Hector, from Iliad Book 24: Priam, at left, grasps Achilles' knees in a posture of supplication, begging him to return the body of Hector, which lies below, its feet still bound from Achilles's dragging it around the walls of Troy. Red-figure hydria (water jar), attributed to a painter of the Pioneer Group; ca. 510-500 BCE (Archaic period). Now housed in the Arthur M. Sackler Museum, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA.
