Ryo looked at the text warily, his thumbs ghosting over the surface of the phone. He considered replying for only a brief second before it buzzed again in his hand. A few seconds later he wished he had turned his phone off.
The tiny hand curled tight around Hayden’s index finger was pinching too hard. The wide brown eyes that accompanied the curious little being almost made the short adult cringe. Hayden didn’t even like kids, but this one had latched on, at first calling out “brother,” then crying at the realization that Hayden was not a perfect match, and now clinging to the only familiar figure in the entire park.
Kids were sticky and smelly and everything Hayden would not look forward to. Yet it was the near future, and that future was not bright.
“Dam- …dang, kid. Your brother’s gotta be around here somewhere.” Hayden’s eyes locked onto a kind-faced woman with nice clothing and designer shoes.
“Ma’am–” Hayden began, hoisting the kid up by the arms and holding the pudgy thing in front of the stranger.
“Is this yours?”
There were a few things that startled Yoona. Being approached in public was one thing, but there she usually knew how to compose herself and get out of a situation if she was recognized. So this surely wasn’t the reason for her terrified yelp as she was approached by the quite helpless looking male. No, it was the little and bubbly thing in his hands. A baby, right, or a toddler. Right now the child was obviously upset, and the stranger looked like he just wanted to get rid off it. But she would be even worse taking care of an upset kid with no clue abut who it belonged to, so she quickly and frantically shook her head.
“Oh o, definitely not! I am sorry, ut...I guess you have to keep looking.” She chewed on her lower lip and felt sort of rude and sorry for her words, but the thought of getting involved in this matter made her nervous. Yet she did not remember a time where her good side did not win, so she was quick to add to her previous statement. “However...I could help. If you’d like to, sir.”
There was an awkward silence that hung in the air that seemed to happen more often than not when the pair were alone. Ryo sat on a chair and watched as Hayden worked, trying not to ask them when they would be leaving especially because he was hungry. His hand pressed to his stomach in an attempt to keep it in line, he could remain quiet. He was a patient man. Patient as one could be in the tense atmosphere that seemed to surround them now that they knew more secrets about one another.
"I'll pay for dinner," he blurted out without any sort of pretext. Ryo was just ready to leave, the laboratory felt like it was getting smaller and he couldn't spend the entire night in there like Hayden. "Can we take a break?" Ryo bit back the small plea in his voice, Hayden was normally the pushy one anyways.
Going to the laboratory was a lot more different now that Hayden knew. They both knew secrets about the other that could get them potentially killed, yet he didn't feel any closer. In fact, he felt like ever since they found out he was an undercover cop sleeping had become even more impossible and he was lucky to remember to eat. Before when he had to go to work with Hayden around he was excited. Now there was a weight in his stomach from how uneasy he felt. Ryo almost wished he was assigned elsewhere but he still wanted to see the other. He still wanted to know they were okay.
Or maybe he still wanted to make sure they wouldn't reveal something that could get him killed. It was more frightening that his identity being exposed wasn't the top of his priority list. He shoved his hands into his pockets once he opened the door to the lab, closing it shut with a swift kick afterwards.
There were a few moments where he stood still, unsure of what to do. Their last few encounters were rather emotional and rocky. Was he supposed to keep his head down and work? "I'm here," he announced, even though Hayden probably had heard. "What can I do today?"
