After the devastating Plague of Athens (430–427 BCE), Hygea began to be worshipped independently. Her temples often contained offerings such as hair and clothing from women. Over time, her cult became instrumental in advancing health practices and understanding disease prevention.
Hygea is typically depicted as a woman with a snake coiled around her body. She holds the snake in one hand while offering it a drink from a bowl in the other. This imagery survives in modern medicine: the snake appears on the Rod of Asclepius, and her bowl represents pharmacy.
Her family was also associated with healing: her sisters Panacea, Iaso, Aceso, and Aglaea represented universal remedies, recuperation, the healing process, and splendor, respectively. Her brother, Telesphorus, often accompanied her.
The word “hygiene” originates from Hygea’s name, emphasizing her enduring legacy in health and cleanliness.
