Syril is organized to within a millimeter of his life. And he's a mixture of horrified and delighted to find out that Chief Hyne is the same. But only mentally. Dealing with Imperial officials and saying just enough to keep them placated and their attention away from his department requires deep knowledge of procedures, timetables, statistics, cost-benefit analysis and future business requirements.

Syril could put all this detailed information onto a gorgeous PowerPoint. Hyne keeps it in his head. And partly on his messy desk where he never bothers to lock his computer screen.

Syril has the charm of a sun-starved rock covered in moss. Hyne knows what each individual likes and needs to hear. Syril would give a one size fits all presentation and be upset when it didn't land with everyone. Or anyone. Hyne knows how to play the game and tailor his reports and requests to the individual. If he's feeling petty and triumphant, he tells Syril how his tailoring skills are only limited to inanimate material.

Stomach Eyes

I thought that I was starved for food

And although hungry was the mood,

My stomach wore it’s sleeping eyes -

I found my mind not satisfied.

I hunted down some information

And dissected all sensation.

Still my body grumbled so,

Filled but yet it bumbled no.

I had misplaced my appetite,

A tad I tasted prism light

Right when I realised the accused

- My Tummy eyes were so confused.

I wasn’t eager for a meal,

My revving drive seemed not to heel.

What I did crave was food for thought;

My brain - it needed quite a lot

Of stories, facts, and other stuff.

I couldn’t seem to get enough.

No matter what I fed my mind,

My appetite just wasn’t kind.

I feasted on whole dictionaries,

Binged on wild visionaries,

Libraries digested -

My hankering protested.

Consumed by my own greediness,

I ever realised

That my attentive neediness

Is never satisfied.
