My Calypso
Scratches an Itch
Tropes: Greek mythology, enemies to lovers (sort of), adventure, tsundere (sort of)
In a diving trip gone wrong, Hyung-Min is kidnapped and finds himself on a mythical Greek island with Calypso - is this a repeat of The Odyssey or something more?
To have a relatively accurate depiction of Greek mythology in a manhwa be THIS boring has to be some sort of a crime. The Greek mythology theme was probably my favourite part of this story and probably what saved it from getting a lower ranking. I liked the world building and the use of all the Greek mythology side characters, it was fun and unique and it definitely added to the story. The reference to The Odyssey was very enjoyable and I felt that really elevated the story - it wasn’t overdone that it took itself too seriously but it still respected the source material enough. But these are really the only good things that I have to say about this manhwa. The main characters were dull and written very superficially. They had had no character arcs or any personal growth. There was a semblance of a backstory for Calypso but it was more about The Odyssey than it was about his character. There was also completely no chemistry between him and the MC and I was extremely unconvinced of how they came to develop feelings for each other. The plot was even more boring. Nothing really felt high stakes and it’s such a waste because so much more could be done given its source material (which was a literal adventure journey). I feel like with such manhwas, smut can kinda come in to save things and maybe give the illusion of chemistry but there wasn’t even that. I didn’t really like this one but there was nothing violently wrong about it and I must say it’ll make me keep a keen lookout for other Greek-mythology themed works.
