bnha stage play class appreciation post!!! part one, probably!!!

Ganyu cares about Xiao a lot but her voicelines suggest she is scared of getting closer to him... is it because he's intimidating, or because she knows how much he has lost and wouldn't want to be just another tragedy on his growing list of traumas..?

She wouldn't want to put him through that hurt again... But they're both lonely in their own ways, and I feel like they could grow very very close if they just took a leap of faith...

I have a lot of thoughts right now on the fact that the only voice Alice heard outside of her own for almost 11 years was Killian’s. The only footsteps besides her own, the only heartbeat, the only coughs or snores or sneezes. The only person to console or scold her. The only person to tell her something was alright or something was wrong. The only one.

Imagine having only one person during your formative years. Not even strangers or the hint of so much as a stray cat. Just one other living, breathing person. Her accent is based on his, her mannerisms are based on his, and everything she knows was learned from him or from something he brought in.

mmm thinking about post-canon zuko feeling uncomfortable living in the fire nation palace again and doing everything he can to avoid being there.

and eventually his friends notice and talk to him about it and he opens up about how being there reminds him of his childhood and how angry and bitter he used to be and it was so empty but stifling at the same time.

so then sokka, ever the simp, says that zuko should take a day off with iroh and let the rest of the gaang try and decorate the palace to make it feel more like home to him and after a bit of convincing (aka: sokka’s pleading eyes), zuko agrees and leaves the palace the next day to spend time with uncle.

so the gaang tries to make the palace feel more like home for zuko by adding things that seem homely to them:

toph makes a bunch of earth statues of zuko and and random things and puts them everywhere but like. they use part of the floor to make the statues, so they end up disrupting the building

sokka gets super excited and goes shopping for decorations and buys a bunch of things for the palace (and most of them are kind of obnoxious because sokka has. a very specific taste)

and aang knows that zuko loves turtleducks so he attempts to create an indoor turtleduck pond (it does Not go well)

and suki panics because she isn’t good at this so she just grabs a bunch of weapons and hides them everywhere like as a treat. so zuko can walk down the hall and find a weapon and be like “dope a sword” and then she goes outside and finds cool rocks and puts them around

and katara actually tries decorating by adding curtains to every window and carpets and stuff

and eventually all five of them end up arguing because they keep disrupting each other as they try and make it more homely and then things get chaotic (aang also brought in some snakes... and birds...) and everything gets messed up: statues get destroyed, the curtains get torn by the animals, the animals are freaking out and now the bathroom is flooding, katara and suki keep taking down sokka’s decorations because they’re ugly, the animals keep finding the weapons and aang keeps tripping over the rocks, toph is just laughing at everyone...

... and then they realize that nothing they did would make any difference to zuko and that he’d still be miserable even if he had different curtains or cool rocks

so then they actually work together and take down all of the portraits of oz*i and sozin. they then focus on zuko’s room and tear down all of the fancy and elaborate stuff that makes zuko feel like he’d trapped. toph creates mini statues (from the earth outside!!!) of the gaang and iroh and mai and ty lee and even azula (because she is in recovery at this point <3) and they don’t look to accurate, but they know that zuko won’t care. aang and toph use their earthbending and make the garden path to the turtleduck pond easier to get to (without destroying any trees or plants!). katara picks fire lillies from outside and puts them in vase at zuko’s bedside, sokka went to a bookstore and found copies of zuko’s favorite plays and suki helped him make a bookshelf for them... they do small, little things that they know zuko would love and would make him feel less like the leader of a nation and more like a person.

and yeah: toph still kept one statue of zuko in the halls. katara changed the curtains in zuko’s room from a bright red set to a purple that she knew he’d find calming. aang made a turtleduck call a left it on zuko’s desk. sokka hung one or two of his own masterpieces up on the walls where the pictures of zuko’s “family” used to be. suki left a couple of hidden daggers (but like... actually hidden) for emergencies and put a couple of cool rocks in his bathroom.

then the group bought fabric and worked together to make zuko a blanket for his bed. it’s green, blue, silver, white, red, yellow, orange... all colors that represented them. they even added a pink patch for ty lee, a black patch for mai, a grey patch patch for iroh, and a gold patch for azula.

zuko definitely cried.

tbh i had been. cautiously excited, even with tom king's involvement (my arch-nemesis), because 1) i REALLY love the green lanterns and i was excited that john stewart would get to be in the co-protagonist seat, since DC loves nothing more than shoving him and simon (<- another black man) into a box that they never ever open 2) i was hoping that with other writers in the room, tom king's effect would be dampened somewhat. but watching the trailer, it's got his ex-CIA officer fingerprints all over 😭

i don't think a more earth-centric green lantern story is inherently bad or wrong - i understand budgetary constraints, needing to onboard people entirely new to the mythos + dennis o'neil who was writing for green lantern at the time of john stewart's first appearance, was known for his more grounded stories <- i bring him up, because john's characterisation and dynamic with hal does seem to evoke his first appearance (green lantern (1960) #87), although now with even more condescension from hal, who in this is much older than him, that leaves a bad taste in my mouth, alongside his snide comment about the other green lanterns being aliens.

there is a lot i can't judge based on just 2 minutes - it's fine if they don't get along from the get-go that's what character development is for, it's fine if they're making changes to the mythos because this is an adaptation etc. but a drab-looking detective story in a small town just makes me wonder what this is even adding to the world??? everything about its visuals reek of it being ashamed of being based on comics and especially after the sheer joy of superman 2025, that felt SO MUCH like an adaptation for people who love comics, as well as people who might be new to it, i'm just kinda. feeling really disappointed 😭
