for today's self-reblog your dragons saturday: there's a lot about potc that is easily undone by adding gigantic, loyal beasts who can fly, and so much of my planning for this fic was centered around keeping plot points recognizable, while not shying away from the very obvious solutions that the dragons provide. (i.e. a dragon would immediately put an end to the black pearl's raid of port royal—how do you get around it? by adding an undead dragon of course!)

but! it does come with the joy of playing with the physicality of dragons. some favorite examples here, from landfall:
