Are there any healthy mother-child relationships on this show? How do they get mothers so wrong 🤦🏻♀️
Aurora Blake w/Bellamy and Octavia: disregarded her existing child’s safety by bringing a second child into the world. Placed the weight of parenthood on the head of a 6-year old child. Sentenced her daughter to a life of severe social and emotional isolation which has played a large part in Octavia becoming a sociopath. Forced her son into a job he didn’t want (a guard) to continue protecting Octavia-something he’d likely have to do for the rest of his life-preventing himself from ever finding a spouse or having children of his own in all likelihood. And what would have happened to Octavia after Bellamy died?
Abby Griffin w/Clarke: allowed a 16 year old boy (Wells) to take the blame for her role in her husband’s death creating an almost unresolvable gap between her daughter and her best friend. Continuously ignored Clarke’s input in S2 as it related to how they should interact with the Grounders, even though Clarke was the one w/actual experience. Very rarely listened to anything Clarke had to say for SEVERAL seasons. Spent SEASONS being horrified that her child was leading people but then literally never does ANYTHING to step in and share that burden with her?! Just overall horrible at parenting.
Indra w/Gaia: literally never spoke about her daughter until she showed up in S4. Was noticeably disappointed in her daughter for literally all of Season 4 because she didn’t want to be a warrior, lmao.Accepted a white girl as her daughter because she DID want to be a warrior I guess?! Didn’t talk to Gaia basically all of S5 until the plot needed her to suddenly “understand” and ‘respect” Gaia’s beliefs. Trash.
Raven’s mom/Raven: Traded her daughter’s rations for alcohol, was apparently absuive in other ways as well.
Abby Griffin w/Raven: (confirmed by Lindsey that Raven sees Abby as a maternal figure): Slapped her for actions Clarke committed. Told Raven she could “Still be useful” when Raven was CLEARLY sinking into a depressive spiral. Offered Finn’s ashes to Clarke instead of Raven, even though she knew Finn was important to Raven (in fact that’s how she got Raven to build the Dropship in S1-by name dropping Finn. Electrocuted Raven for drugs, lol.
Murphy’s Mother w/Murphy: was an alcoholic who was verbally abusive and blamed Murphy for his father’s death (because his father stole extra medicine for Murphy).
Hannah Green/Monty Green: tried to force her son over to Pike’s side, did not care about his reasons or reticence for not joining. (We didn’t spend a lot of time exploring their relationship before Hannah was killed (twice) by her son.
Clarke Griffin/Madi: is trying to force her own fears (of the Flame) onto her. Doesn’t believe she’s capable of making her own decisions regarding her body and/or culture (the Flame is a part of Madi’s culture not Clarke’s). In the clip for next episode she tries to take the Flame out of Madi without her permissions and bodily forces her to get back in the rover (and yes I understand she can’t walk across a desert alone-but talking to your kids WORKS).
So literally NONE of the maternal relationships on this show (even the ones that AREN’T seen on screen) suck.
