so i read some stuff
The Magpie Society [books one and two]: 8/10 this was a great book to read overall, great characters with depth. pretty typical murder-mystery-at-school book, but with an amazing twist that i did not see coming.
You’ll Be The Death Of Me: 7/10 another murder mystery solved by high school teenagers, this one took a slightly darker turn than One Of Us Is Lying (same author) but was still an enjoyable read. a little predictable at times, and the ending wasnt quite and *ending* but still enjoyed it.
These Violent Delights + Our Violent Ends: 10/10 loved this from start to finish. i’ll be honest, i was kinda skeptical going into it at first with the whole “redone romeo and juliette” thing but it was an absolutely amazing read and its great to see a YA book set in china with quite a lot of historical accuracy [ignoring the monster]. even though i knew the story of romeo and juliette, it felt like reading an entirely new story [even if the names were similar] and i was absolutely hooked. emotionally destroyed me. loved it.
Cursebreaker Trilogy: 9/10 another ‘retelling’ kinda series, this one of beauty and the beast, but done extremely well. there was a pretty good range of representation, an engaging story with good plot twists. i will admit i got slightly bored towards the end of the third book and the ending was very “happily ever after” but it was still a great series to read.
The Queens Assassin + The Queens Secret: 4/10 yeah didnt enjoy this one. i went into it with high expectations and had just finished TVD before it. i think it was a combination of the typical storyline + the characters were just not interesting. i actually found the main character kinda annoying throughout the entire first book. i did enjoy the little twist at the end of the second book when the antagonist is revealed, but other than that i kinda forced myself to finish it.
Inheritance Games + Hawthorne Legacy: 9/10 and 8/10 I really enjoyed the first book, i thought it was a pretty overused plotline but done in a way that was more unique. reminded me a lot of knives out, which is my favourite movie. the second book wasn’t quite as good [mainly because i think she ended up with the wrong guy but we’re not going to get into that] but the fact that theres so much mystery in the books with so much left to solve and so many people involved makes it super engaging.
4 Dead Queens: 6.5/10 this book has been sitting on my shelf for a long time and i finally got around to reading it, but it was a pretty enjoyable read overall. i didnt really have any attachment to any of the characters, and the random plot twist of the daughter was... random and felt like it was thrown in for the sake of having a plot twist to avoid the “secretly she’s been the princess this whole time” thing. the ending felt rushed but was still good in how it tied the story together. the action was really good and the worldbuilding was really interesting.
