I'm assuming this is about Steve in 5x01? Yeah, I will say a lot about the writing in the later seasons, especially season 5, but they do really explicitly hit you over the head with Steve and Nancy's incompatibility and he is not her partner.
I especially love that it was JONATHAN of all people, the one who wasn't even there when it happened, to be like "do you remember Nancy's vision? Let's maybe take her seriously?" Only for Steve to be like "Nah, Vecna is just a little prankster, he isn't so serious" (meanwhile, Max is still in a coma after Venca broke literally every bone in her body and only lived because of El's intervention).
