Invalid/ignorant reasons I’ve seen

large female fanbase

This is probably one of the biggest arguments I’ve seen for people not taking kpop seriously. This reasoning is invalid because it’s rooted in the idea that the thoughts and opinions of young women are invalid. You can even see this thought process with artists who feel like having male fans is more impressive/better than female fans. I completely understand that kpop fans period can be extreme and very annoying but that’s not exclusive to girls nor is it a reason to dislike the music itself. I personally can’t stand most artist stans but I can still respect artists enough to take their art seriously if that’s what they clearly want

lack of diversity, read: lack of white people

A lot of people complain that kpop doesn’t include enough westerners (which almost never means koreans born outside of asia, black people, southeast/southwest asians, etc.) as if white people must be included in all spaces. It’s dumb to have to say this but kpop doesn’t have to be white for white people to relate to it

because it’s korean

Yeah, I’ve literally heard people say this... Not only is this blatantly xenophobic but it also makes no sense? If you can listen to and enjoy Latin music, which is largely infused with, and (in the case of certain culture vultures) ripped off of West Indian music, you can get into korean music. I understand the language barrier can be difficult but I can guarantee you that anyone who sang Despacito, Gasolina, or any Daddy Yankee/Wisin & Yandel/etc. track had no clue what those songs were about

Also, the people who say this are usually trying to cover up for latent gender normativity/xenophobia and don’t want to like it because the fashion/performative element usually doesn’t conform to gender norms and simply focuses on korean/east asian people

Valid reasons I’ve seen

kpop doesn’t take itself seriously

This is actually pretty true and very valid. You can see this in the way idols respond to certain questions like, “what is your favorite song right now?” “Do you listen to your own songs?”, etc. For example, very recently in an interview, Bam Bam asked an interviewer what songs he sings in the shower and the interviewer said a GOT7 song and not only did Bam Bam looked at him with that u lyin face but he also said ‘oh come on, we know that’s not true.” Now you can make the case that it was just a joke (I don’t doubt it), but it’s not the first time an idol has alluded to not liking their own work or not thinking of their own work as impressive/real music/etc.

Whenever an idol is asked about their favorite music, they always resort to either k-hiphop/k-r&b artists or american artists. They almost never cite their own music or even when they make public playlists, you’d be hard pressed to find their own songs (or even other kpop songs) on those artists’ playlists

kpop is western pop if western pop was trapped in the early 2000s

i’ve talked about this before on this blog and so have many others so I’m not going to expound on this too much. Just know that all idols attend the United States School of Popular Music and pass ‘Adult Contemporary & Popular Artists of the 1995-2005′ with flying colors

cringey, repetitive, manufactured music and images 

Again, I don’t really need to say much here because some idol groups are here 5+ years later with music that hasn’t changed since debut. There’s no reason why Du Duu Du Duu should sound like Boombayah’s cursed twin, Blackpink. Also, why do many idols seem to have copy paste personalities? I blame this point mostly on the companies themselves for controlling idols to some extent but at some point idols are just inauthentic

insensitivity & widespread inappropriate behavior being swept under the rug

this deserves its own post but nearly every popular idol has said/done things that are absolutely deplorable, with some even having whole sexual assault cases and drunk driving strikes against them as if putting other people’s lives in danger is a fun hobby. Dating is not a scandal, getting a sun tan (??) is not a scandal, cursing is not a scandal. Racism IS a scandal, blackface IS a scandal, sexual assault IS a scandal, homicidal tendencies IS a scandal. I swear a lot of k-fans have some backwards as perceptions of reality. The latter, NOT the former is what turns i-fans off from kpop the most

All in all, I understand not caring for kpop but I also realize that some people just don’t like what’s unfamiliar.

I’d like to apologise to all the Korean fans that get bashed by certain International fans that go overboard and don’t bother to clear up misunderstandings caused by mistranslations, cultural differences, language gaps, etc.

Y’all deal with a lot of shit from some of us, and I die inside every time I see an I-fan comment something along the lines of “I hate K-fans, I-fans would take so much better care of our oppas”.

Ew.

I'm kinda tired of the prejudices that International kpop fans have to face.

not from our own countries but from the domestic Korean/Asian fans.

I constantly see shit like "its impossible for I-fans to like kpop for the music they're 90% in it for the hot people."

well you know what? when I first got into kpop  by watching Big Bang's mv for Fantastic baby I thought they were but ugly, then I watched Monster and was like wtf are they wearing?!?! I didn't BUY the songs because I thought the people were hot, I bought the songs because they were stuck in my head for days and I couldn't stop singing the few english lines there were. 

usually when I get into a new group I have to stare at the members A LONG TIME in order to find something attractive about them. the saying "I can't listen to their faces" is sooo true it's scary!

when I'm depressed I don't turn to a picture of Taeyang and cry, I turn to Haru Haru or 0330 by U-Kiss.

when I want to jump around and be sexy I don't stare at 2PM's sexy MV for ADTOY i listen to Wassup's Hotter than a Summer.

I am NOT in it for the hot people, cos I can find them where I live like an hour away from Toronto where there are TONS of hot Asians. The attractive people are just a bonus really ;p

while I may not understand every single Korean word I know when they're singing about love, or pain, or friendship, or having a good time. I can FEEL the songs, I cant FEEL their freaking face.

So you know what you self righteous Domestic fans? you can get off you're damn high horse and be friendly and NOT racist because even though its not every single one the few of you who are rude to us are giving the rest a bad name. 

I've heard of the crap you've pulled when we come to your country to praise "YOUR" IDOLS and without us there would be no "american" market to break into, not even a chance. so do your oppas and unnies a favour and be nice, okay?

Let me clearify that I am not including all k-fans.

This is what I am talking about and there is video (granted there could have been more to that then what was shown).

I-fans are treated so horribly. When you have I-fans that will go to Korea for vacations just to see their bias groups and only speak the language a little bit, you have very few bilingual fans in that fanclub that will help them out. And when there are those few people, they have to help other possible non-fluent korean speaking I-fans, so they can stay one one person for so long.

But when I-fans don't know the customs, instead of being told or having someone tell them, they get bitched and shit for it and it is unfair.

K-fans (some not all) are so absorbs in there stuck up worlds of "I can speak korean, I am korean, I can do more things (concerts fanmeets fansigns etc) than you heuhue you can't" it looks bad on those few that aren't like that.

Do we treat you guys like this? No we do not.

fan videos

fantaken photos

translations

sometimes even merchandise that we can purchase

occasionally music/concert live streams

Why would we treat you like that? We respect you because of such things and we just want to love our bias groups just as much as you do.

Some K-fans shouldn't act so high and mighty like you do. We sure as shit don't wouldn't do that shit to you if you came over here to see the same groups in america or england.

You get a hell of a lot more of an advantage 

you can speak the language

you can go to fan meets and fansigns

you can buy the albums in stores and merchandise

you have a chance of spottng them in public

you can go to concerts and music shows

you get to sit in on fan hangouts with I-fans even though they are for I-fans

you get to sit in on pre-recordings of shows

you get to see muscials they appear in

you get to watch dramas on your tv

you can watch the movies that they appear in in the theaters

you get to buy the products that they endorse (cosmetic or not)

you get pictures

You get to talk to them

And many other things.

What do I-fans get

once a year kcon (maybe)

entertainment company concerts (maybe. if it's SMTOWN, we're lucky to get it in L.A and New York)

Bias groups coming to vegas, L.A, New York (not that often and they only stay a few days)

some group concerts for about 3-7 days (it varies)

live steam lags

shit for being international fans

bashed on by K-fans(some)

8balled/black sheeped in all the fandoms

2-4 week shipping of our online purchase wait

Do not edit/crop/gif of videos or photos taken by fans

bashed for bitching at K-fans(some) for treating us so badly

bitched at when we get too close to oppar in our contries

god damn live stream lags

google + hangouts

signed albums from the members with a 2-4 weeks shipping wait

expensive ass shipping charges

pictures with bias groups when we behave

that special feeling when they accept our fan gifts

and that shit feeling when managers say no

THEY FUCKING LIVE STREAM LAGS!

There are some good things, but most of it is bad and no one is willing to say it because we will get "you whiney bitches... you should be greatful"

K-fans are really no better than I-fans, so please sit the fuck down and start treating everyone else right. Maybe then, people will stop thinking that all K-fans are horrible.
