They meet at Harvard Law. 

Rachel has a crush on him from day one, declaring them both the next Bill and Hillary of their generation. Ian remarks that she is nothing like Hillary, that running for office isn't meant for people as emotional as her. 

Accrediting the behavior to her love of performance, she reminds him of Ronald Reagan, and he knows in that exact moment that she's the one for him. 

They're married on a rainy Saturday in August. 

She might not be Hillary just yet, but if he's entirely honest with himself, he's not Bill yet, either. Still-- the mayoral office is a damn good start.

At first, he never looks at her twice on the morning subway in New York City. No matter how much of a hipster he is, he's never been a big David Foster Wallace kind of guy, where meaning is derived from the choices of our perception, and he can't help just how much the guy blaring his music out of his headphones with no regard whatsoever to those around him irritates the shit out of him. 

Then one morning, Rachel pulls a move so incredibly, stereotypically Rachel, that he can't help but watch her coffee spill all over her white blouse, completely drenching her outfit intended for work-- grinning like a fucking loon. 

Delivering wisecracks is his specialty, and even when she hits him, once, twice, three times, he doesn't have a single regret after that moment. 

If he wasn't such a smartass, he'd have never met the girl of his dreams. 

Lucky bastard that he is.

Iachel: birthday (his, hers, or their son's) ?

Ian has always been just this side of selfish in his own ways-- he never had a father, so he has a good enough reason to be fucked up. But when it comes to Thomas, it's like Rachel watches him forget himself. Where his own birthday has become a political event-- or a regular workday with additional sex-- and Rachel's birthday comes off to him as more obligation than anything else-- Thomas' birthday is wholly a selfless one for both of them. There's nothing more important in the world on that day than seeing Thomas laugh as he plunges his tiny little growing fist into his cake, the biggest smile on his face.It's on days like this that he quietly thanks his late father. Thank you for showing me what not to do, dad-- you're a real champ.

Barbra's on TV and Rachel finds Ian much more interesting, IT'S CLEARLY TRUE LOVE.

Oh, him asking if she would help with his tie was fucking adorable. That whole little interchange with her egging him on to go seize the moment was just ... I LOVED it. They're such a team. 

"It all comes out over bourbon in Ian’s office." Speaking as the token adopted southern girl, I will confirm that a LOT of things come out over bourbon. 

I love him so much for turning Wright down immediately, even though that's CLEARLY not the end of it....

Their 'I love you's were so .... pragmatic and unromantic, but made SO SO MUCH SENSE for them in this context! It wasn't a soppy moment that didn't fit the way their relationship had progressed and that ... made it even more special.

So I finally read the first part of Tam and Beth's Iachel RP and JDHG;HWER;GH WHAT IS AIR OMG. 

"He’s here purely for professional reasons, but he smiles at her like she’s a girl that caught his eye on the train, like he rode four stops in the wrong direction just to get a chance to ask her to dinner." khgihw;er I love this line so much!!!!!!!

Rachel's sales pitch for herself. OMFG. 

OMFG. She questioned his ambition and he insulted Broadway. OMG you two are going to be so much fun together and you're going to have really angry sex one of these days. 

"I'd like to find an equal, ideally, who would be able to understand my drive to get to the top as much as I'd be able to understand theirs." JBLFGL;GRFGLU YES YES YES THIS IS WHY THEY'RE PERFECT FOR EACH OTHER. 

He has a dog named after a president whose political career began in Illinois, and she has a cat named after a certain Broadway character. Fucking perfect babies. 

Rachel loves the idea of being First Lady of Chicago. She WOULD.

OMFG him letting her hold his hand and touching her under the table and slipping her his g&t to try to make the situation with the skeevy alderman easier. And then getting all clinical asking questions about it before having to stake his CLAIM on her again. kggafkhe oh Ian you are so precious and so fucked up all at the same time.
