In All Your Illness

" The boy who can make everyone smile... except for him.

Ixtli Alba has had a rough life, though you wouldn't know it from the token smile he's always wearing. His father isn't in the picture. He's bullied for who he loves. And he's just recently recovered from his relationship with his ex-boyfriend. Despite this, he always strives to make others happy and to inspire smiles in others, and it always seems to work out.

Except for this time.

Alba meets a young man named Rowan Coltello, who, despite Alba's best efforts, can never seem to smile. The secret hidden underneath Rowan's long sleeves and his standoffish, miserable demeanor has left him without friends for some time now. Still, Alba is determined to make a friend out of this intriguing person, someone who finally seems to understand him. And, more importantly, determined to find a way to inspire happiness in him. Will Alba get to see his newfound friend smile? Or is Rowan as he believes himself to be: a lost cause? "

What you've just read is the plot for my manuscript "In All Your Illness," which is a short, realistic fiction novel about two young boys struggling to survive life as high schoolers struggling with major mental illness and trauma. This book has openly queer characters, drama, suspense, and the bittersweet quality of the unfortunate yet inevitable: real life.
