I read about Diego Luna using his own accent and was like "YAY Iberican in the movies!!" and then I was like "WAIT. I don't recall any references to Iberican outside of fic. let me just go check this isn't just really popular fanon...." and I googled and it turns out IBERICAN DOES NOT EXIST OUTSIDE OF YOUR FIC. I WOULD HAVE SWORN UNDER OATH THAT IT WAS ACTUAL CANON. IT IS NOT. I AM DEEPLY DISAPPOINT.

It’s just me, I know. It’s just me. I sort of half-assed it, too; I decided that since Spain and Portugal are on the Iberian peninsula I could just mangle the word and use it for a hopefully semi-a-political familiar-sounding but sort of neutral umbrella name. 

The idea isn’t just me, though. Space Latinos are a thing people have been excited about at *least* since they cast Jimmy Smits to play Bail Organa in part 3 of the prequels nobody saw but we all discourse about all the time. (I do not recall the name of the actress who played Breha Organa, and she apparently only had like point three seconds of screen time, but I know she was Filipina. And maybe that was meant to mean something, and maybe it was just because the casting director liked pairing up a couple of similarly brownish people, hard to say, but-- it’s canon, anyway, that Leia was raised by a pair of Space Latinxs, so that’s gotta mean something.) 

ANYHOO. I am extremely excited about Space Latinxs, and especially if they’re willing to have People With Accents that Aren’t Just Exotic Or “Villanous” Accents But Just Actual Accents Because They’re Native Speakers Of A Different Language And That’s Cool. 

It’s really time to put an end to this weird fantasy that somehow in fantasy worlds, everyone speaks the same language except for colorful adding of atmosphere. All humans have one language, and then the aliens make whistles and clicks or speak like an old Japanese man. (Yoda’s speech pattern is just Japanese grammar; it’s a “head-final” language where you always end with a verb. It’s not mystical or anything, it’s just fucking Japanese, millions of people speak it.) Using aliens as metaphors for foreigners really doesn’t get you all that far. Give me diverse humans, and then aliens on top of that, and now we’re talking, now we’re interesting. 

And I am not territorial about Iberican as an ethno-linguistic Space Identity, I just feel like people should be aware that I made that up, and it’s totally cool to use but it’s not canon.
