I love when Raven!Neil AUs include some kind of background Ichineil plotline because it fits with my vision of Nathaniel as functionally the limited-edition action figure of Riko’s favorite TV villain that his big brother got for Christmas instead of him, making him simultaneously jealous of the toy (for having Ichirou’s attention more often than he does (never)) and of Ichirou (because it’s not fair, he barely even plays with it, it should have been mine). Nathaniel is fully aware of this, obviously, and it just makes him look down on Riko even more like damn he really is just a grown child with a cringe little celebrity crush on a serial killer huh

Why is IchiNeil so... compelling? Your replies detailing aspects of their hypothetical relationship have gotten me on board??? With a ship between two characters who exchange like two lines of dialogue???? How?????

Hmm, I think… because Ichirou sees something of worth in Neil? It’s with strings (OH BOY WHAT STRINGS), but Ichirou has the power of life and death over Neil, and when Neil’s father would gladly kill him, carve him up and toss him aside at worst and sell him off to be broken at best, when Tetsuji and Riko would use him up and break him… Ichirou sizes him up and sees him as having value then lets him go (WITH STRINGS). Granted, Neil lives up to that value or forfeits his life, I’m not saying Ichirou is some virtuous savior, but the seeds are there for Ichirou SEEING something in Neil.

Granted, the relationship is difficult. If you stick to canon, I feel you have to go with dubcon because Ichirou has all the power and how can Neil really have true choice there? (that and there’s ANDREW) That’s why it’s dubcon in Black as a Raven, even though Ichirou clearly has feelings for Neil. But I think you can write something IchiNeil (AU) - some authors have done a good job of this and I would like to write an IchiNeil AU some day (even have it plotted out).

But canon? Yeah, it’s tricky.
