I’m assuming I should take it as a 3-way ship in all directions? I hope I’m getting it right.

when I started shipping it if I did:

I haven’t given it thought as a combo before, maybe just the three ships separate from each other.

my thoughts:

Pretty good, I can see where it’s coming from. Especially after Renji’s sentimental moment during the last arc when he told Ichigo he’s the main reason he managed to reconnect with Rukia. Ichigo sees them as this odd duo of people from a different world who get him into crazy situations but are also his most reliable allies within Soul Society. Then, whenever they’re in the World of the Living, the dynamic gets flipped because Renji and Rukia are a *social disaster* when they’re there, especially when combined, so Ichigo has to pay attention that they properly blend in. On a serious note, the main reason Renji and Rukia need someone like Ichigo around them is because they’ve always been in a context — especially as young — when they had to take themselves really seriously so they’d end up with tons of unspoken conflicts. Ichigo has a good ability to prevent interpersonal drama from blowing out of proportion because of how level-headed he is in his relationships with others. He can go up to them with a “Maybe you guys should just calm down and sort this out, you know.” They all contribute something different to the ship; Renji is the temperamental one, Rukia is dutiful with an occasional fun side, Ichigo is calmer and better at sorting out problems than both of them. The three of them have some issues with self-image in common, some problems Ichigo has to deal with seem like a mixture of things Renji and Rukia have struggled with, so he could get useful advice from them; on feeling like you haven’t done everything you could to protect and support your loved ones, and on blaming yourself for outside factors respectively.

What makes me happy about them:

As I said, they’d be a solid emotional support group for each other, I suppose that’s a wholesome thing. It’s really nice how Ichigo facilitated the communication between Renji and Rukia.

What makes me sad about them:

In every ot3 there’s always the dilemma of one person being left out. These three all have their separate dynamics, common grounds and experiences two-by-two. For Ichigo and Rukia there’s… a lot, most of Bleach’s plot; for Renji and Rukia there’s their childhood; and I guess Renji and Ichigo would have bro bonding moments. One of them would easily feel like a third wheel.

I don’t think I’ve read any fics of them that I remember; surely not enough to have a trope that annoys me.

things I look for in fanfic:

I don’t have precise criteria? I’d be curious about the porn though. I had to say it.

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: 

All I can think of is that Ichigo is another character I ship with a lot of people, Grimmjow, Ishida and Azien primarily. My other Rukia ships I’m not extensively invested in, but her and Orihime? (Or that one guy from the fillers who got stuck in Hueco Mundo, that was nice.) As for Renji, I also like byakuren quite a lot.

My happily ever after for them:

The same thing as the canon ending but without the established marriages. It’s not difficult for them to get along as long as Soul Society doesn’t make them run around and risk their lives constantly.

who is the big spoon/little spoon:

All I know is that Rukia is the big spoon in any situation. Plot twist.

what is their favorite non-sexual activity:

Rukia and Renji going on vacation to the World of the Living and visiting completely mundane places like overenthusiastic tourists as if it’s the best thing they’ve ever seen. Ichigo has to guide them and explain how to operate about 90% of everyday objects.
