i'm too brackish brained for this earth. whatever go my blorbo
Completed my annual viewing of Independence Day.
Gosh I love this movie.
I love it for the same reasons I love Die Hard. Ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Captain Hiller is just a Marine pilot doing his job who volunteers to fly into space to save the world. He doesn’t have to. He chooses to. Julius is just a tag-along because his son is one of the main characters and he ends up inadvertently coming up with the idea that saves mankind from extinction. Jasmine just wanted to get her son to safety and see her boyfriend and she comforts the dying First Lady. David could have walked away but he confronts his ex-wife and the President who doesn’t like him to warn them of the alien threat. He knows they might not listen to him but he goes in anyway. President Whitmore could have stayed in a bunker but he uses his combat flying experience to volunteer just like everyone else. Russell Casse has a screw or three loose but he’s the one who makes the sacrifice play to stop the aliens.
They were all just normal people. Normal people who chose to step up and do the impossible.
You also get Will Smith in his prime, Mary McDonnell before she was President Roslin, Brent Spiner as the mad scientist, and Adam Baldwin before he was Jayne Cobb, John Casey, and the XO on The Last Ship. Seriously. What’s not to love?
They just don’t make movies like this anymore.
