As far as I can tell, this design was introduced in 1940, but variations of it kept being produced until 1948 (sources: pics; model info)

I assumed it'd been constructed for it as an intentional joke, since the NES controller is so obvious, so it's funny that they actually got it secondhand from a "serious" movie
