Monica took a deep breath, kept her eyes down and paused. “Stress I guess? I have no idea. Some times I just can’t sleep.” She finally looked back up at Brandy. “I…did not want to worry you. You always have so much going on, you’re just…” She trailed off.
"Then, I don't know, roll over and wake me up? I would stay up with you and talk with you," Brandy said, feeling like Monica can't depend on her much. "I may have things going on but if we're together, your problems are my problems."
“Great! Well, I appreciate it… like I said I’m totally useless when it comes to cars. I had to call my mom and see what to do, believe it or not this is the first car issue I’ve ever had except a flat tire once.” Nora admitted shyly, hoping that Brandy didn’t look down on her for being mechanically challenged. She was great at other things! She just never grew up with a dad to teach her those kind of things, and never had an interest in seeking to learn them on her own. She admired the other woman for being so knowledgeable in a field she was completely without skills in. “You do a good job maybe I’ll make you my go to mechanic,” she joked, nudging her gently. Nora’s cheeks flushed as her ex girlfriend agreed to eat with her. She bit back a comment about it not being a date, because she was single, maybe it could be one. The redhead glanced up when she heard the change in Brandy’s voice. “Oh.” She bit down on her lip, grinning. “More than cool. That’s – that’s really sexy, actually…” Pausing, she considered the statement she was about to make before letting it fall out of her mouth. “I bet you have girls lining up for you, successful mechanic, nice motorcycle…the pinnacle of a hot butch.” She hope the statement wasn’t offensive in any way, she meant it in the best of ways. It was why she was so attracted to Brandy, especially now. Nora hoped that was obvious, but not in a desperate sort of way. She hoped she wasn’t making an idiot out of herself.
"That's, like, not a bad thing. You keep your car in good condition, and it lasts longer. Maybe it was just fate for us to meet. I mean, what're the odds you have car troubles, a mechanic is out sick, and I get to work on your car?" Brandy pointed out, wiggling her brows. Okay, she knew that was a tad flirtatious but how could she help herself? Nora was smiling so brightly. Brandy felt like she was falling all over again. "Hey, I'm okay with that. The more business, the better." She replied with a nonchalant shrug. The brunette ducked her head, hiding her face as it turned red from Nora's comments. Goodness, was this really happening? Were they really reconnecting? Without commenting she stepped away to grab her helmet from the main office, punched out, and Brandy returned minutes later with something clever to say. "To that I can only say, if you look behind you, and in front of you, it's obvious the amount of women I have lining up. I'm not as much of a hot butch these days, unfortunately." Brandy teased, tilting her head as she passed Nora the helmet. "For the femme," Now she was just kidding around, giving it right back to the other woman without hesitation. "My bike is this way..." She added before walking out proudly to the parking lot. There was only one motorcycle out there and it was hers.
Though her lips parted, no sound came from her mouth. Angelina hadn’t quite been joking about the refund or the lap dance, but she didn’t dare admit it out loud. Being finally so close to Phoebe was making her so nervous that she could feel her palms become sweatier with every passing second. Standing there, unable to do what people usually paid her to do, Angelina felt more naked and vulnerable than she had in years. “Phoebe,” she said softly, hesitantly, “I couldn’t forget you even if I tried.” The admission felt natural; something that she had been thinking since she had decided to pull away from the older woman. “And I don’t actually want to forget about you.” Not ever was at the tip of her tongue, but Angelina swallowed back the words, refusing to sound fake or desperate.
After a pause, Angelina pushed the bottle of champagne and the glasses aside to sit on the table, unsure what to do. The couch would have been too close to Phoebe, too comfortable and personal. “I never imagined I would meet you here. Or ever meet you at all after what I did to you.” She tucked a lock of hair back behind her ear, looking at Phoebe through thick eyelashes. Guilt was sinking its claws into her heart. Angelina had been avoiding Phoebe so that she wouldn’t discover the stripper gig, and now she had discovered it all on her own, surrounded by people who seemed to be her friends, or at least acquaintances.
“Phoebe— Please— You didn’t do anything wrong at all. It is not your fault,” Angelina assured, small smile coming back to her lips. “I decided to cease correspondences so that I could hide this,” she gestured to the skimpy outfit and the terribly cheesy decoration of the room, “this part of my life. I believed that someone with a job like yours wouldn’t be able to accept it. I mean, I told you I’m a law student, which is true, if you must know. There is a big difference between just a law student, and student during the day and stripper at day.” She crossed her arms over her chest, trying her best to feel less exposed. “Your divorce, your lack of experience, it was never the problem. I don’t have much experience either. I appreciate your honesty more than anything, and I hope you can forgive me for having been dishonest with you.”
The admission was unexpected. Phoebe was expressing that in her facial expression. Sure, it was surprising to find out that a woman she was interested in was a stripper, but could that ever be enough of a deal breaker? Clearly, sitting here now, the answer became apparent. No, this job didn't freak her out, didn't make her judgmental in any way. These days she found it difficult to admit she was a police officer. What, with everything going on in America. Phoebe loved what she did but it didn't mean everyone wanted to date a police officer. So in some crazy way, she understood where Angelina was coming; she knew why she hid it. Even when it didn't bother Phoebe the slightest, she sympathized. There was a stigma with strippers and exotic dancers. Licking over her lips, Phoebe nodded slowly. "That's nice to hear, I'm not going to lie. Selfish as it seems."
When Angelina sat down across from her, Phoebe scooted toward the edge of her seat. She listened intently to everything the other woman was saying. "I know, and I'm sorry that meeting was under these circumstances. I promise, I'm not stalking you or anything. My friend is getting married and we were just celebrating." Phoebe insisted with a hint of embarrassment in her tone. "I wish you didn't feel like you had to hide this considering how honest and open I was with you." She replied before licking over her lips. She could really use a drink right now, all things considered. "Truthfully, I haven't been here before. Not with anyone. I can't say that I would've been all for it, but I don't think I would have judged you for your job choice. Whether you were in school or not. It's really not in my character to judge a book by its cover." Being a police officer, she had to look at every person with a certain level of skepticism. Then again, she never could imagine that mentality bleeding into her personal life.
Realistically, Phoebe felt as thought Angelina didn't owe her an apology. "There's no need for apologies or forgiveness. There was a gap in communication and you don't have to tell me everything. Especially since you don't know me that well," Which she had to add to the equation. After all, this was new. Shiny and new. "There's only so much you're allowed to be comfortable with. That's just how it is." The older woman nodded slowly before reaching out to place her hand over Angelina's. Soft, warm, everything she could have ever imagined. "Can we start over? From the top. We can get to know each other as people and see where it goes. I really enjoyed your conversations and company. You were the best person on Tinder." She couldn't resist laughing lightly. "Please, don't make me go back on that app and try again. I failed miserably after you stopped talking to me. It was... terrible. Awful. I'm also pretty sure I was messaging a guy for a few days until the account was deleted." She admitted with creased eyebrows and desperation written on her features.
Goddamn you, Haung. Her top officer was too clever for her own good. All the other Enforcers didn’t even blink an eye at the evidence, or the lack thereof. Phoebe saw beyond what Alizabeth had prepared for. She was getting dangerously close to the macroscopic picture and for her officer’s sake, Alizabeth could not afford that Phoebe discovers any semblance of the truth. Behind the group of Enforcers that gathered to watch Phoebe go off the handle, Alizabeth noticed the smallest of motions from a few meters off. Wordlessly, she walks towards it has gone unnoticed. The Commander could only muster a flabbergasted expression on her face as her contact remains in the vicinity. “What are you doing here?! You’re going to get yourself killed,” she scolds quietly, only to render an apologetical begging response. There was a high enough risk and a lot of pressure and tenseness in the air around the very people tasked to kill men like him, but the man was too important to her own little operation that she restrained herself from alerting the group to kill him or even kill him herself.
“Listen to me. You run as far north as your feet would take you, I’ll take things from here,” she says in an almost annoyed tone, pushing the man to the direction she specified. The Commander ran as far from the spot she’d encountered her contact and pulled out the knife from its sheath. There was only one way to distract from this… and it was going to hurt. Being attacked by one runner who successfully ran away should be enough to be cause for distraction. With a deep breath, Alizabeth scanned for the least critical spot on her leg. 3…2…1… Alizabeth screamed in pain that echoed in the forest as the knife bore into her flesh, blood soaking her uniform like a slow red river.
The anger could be heard through the entire mountain. Phoebe knew that and didn't care. For some reason, as she continued to talk to her squad, one of them kept looking away. 'Ma'am, I--' Phoebe didn't know that something caught his eye, but honestly, didn't care. 'No, ma'am, I think there's---' The last thing she wanted to hear about was them spotting something now. Right now. While they stood here in nothingness. Phoebe was enraged by defeat and she was trying to figure out a new plan. Now was not the time to derail that. So after calling for the man continuously, he finally caved and kept his focus on Phoebe. "We need to move South. We need to call the guards from both the North and South. Everyone needs to be fanned out. No one can escape and that's an order. Tell them, any runner that gets away? A guard will take their place and---" Before she could finish her list of demands, Phoebe could overhear Alizabeth's scream. "What?" Her brows furrowed. It was blood curdling and shocking. Something she never expected to happen.
Attention was drawn over to her position, and Phoebe was the first one running. "Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God," Quickly catching the other woman and brought her down to the floor carefully before applying pressure to the wound. "How-- Alizabeth? How did this happen? What happened?" That's when her guard from earlier spoke up. 'I saw someone, ma'am, I was trying to tell you this before--' Phoebe scowled at the man. Really? He wanted to be right, right now? "Speak up then, comrade, I'm not your grandmother. If you see something, do something. Don't tell me. Go after them!" Another soldier came beside Phoebe to tend to Alizabeth, slowly removing the knife to get to the injury. "What happened? Alizabeth?" The other soldier interjected again. 'There was a man, running through thick. He went that way-- C'mon--' Phoebe huffed, pointing at three other men to go with him. "Go, see where he's headed. Bring him back. Dead or alive." She growled, exhaling nervously. "We're gonna get him, commander."
“The portfolios were put together to provide variety - not to tell an asthetically pleasing story; fluidity, as you put it.” Ainsley explained calmly, no mal intent behind her voice; she understood why the photos would seem random, but the portfolio was put together specifically for this job interview. She wanted to include the range of photography she was capable of. “A good photograph doesn’t need a set to tell a story - it inspires others; connects with them emotionally, the way a piece of art would.” Gingerly, she took one of the folders, and picked specifically a picture of a butterfly. It had just emerged from its cacoon, during sunrise, evidence of morning dew scattered along the leaves and cacoon, itself. It was taken with her film camera, and facing it towards Kiara, Ainsley smiled at her. “The detail in this photograph is numerous. I waited two hours to be able to capture this very moment. The rays of a peaking sun, the drops of condensation, and a butterfly ready to spread its wings at the start of a new day. A butterfly can have an average lifespan of three days - sometimes a week, or two depending on species. This picture doesn’t need a thousand words; it just needs to inspire the feeling of hope, perhaps. Maybe motivation, to another. A beautiful creature beginning a life unaware of how short it would be; and planning to make the most of it.”
She was confident in her pick of the particular photograph, as well. “No, I won’t be taking close ups of insects - this is including to show you the patience, attention to detail, and a natural eye for a picture I have. I captured this with a film camera. A camera that doesn’t take five pictures in a single second. My eye and timing for this art is the one thing I’ve always been above average in. You say they’re random, which in all fairness, you’re not wrong. But if you look at them again, from the perspective of how a picture can make you feel - maybe the mini story you create, yourself, to go along with it. Looking at it like that, they’re not so random at all.”
Giving a smile and a nod, Ainsley shrugged a single, casual shoulder. “In the reference letter from my professor, you’ll read that she mentions my ability to work on group projects, and praises my team efforts. Then again, working in a college black room requires the ability to do that.” She chuckled softly. “Some professions call for the ability to be like.. an oak tree - strong, steardy, unyielding. Photography requires the ability to be a willow tree.. flowing in the wind, adaptable, creative.. And I have that in spades.” A job interview was specifically meant to sell oneself to an employer, but Ainsley wasn’t going to lie to the other just to get a once in a lifetime opportunity. On one hand, she could lie, get the job, then be fired for lying. On another, she could lie, pick up what she lied about quickly, then have to live with knowing it was based on a lie.
“Everyone has their faults - mine would be people. Interacting with them outside of photography, I mean. To say the idea of having to work around reporters is nerve inducing, it’s.. an understatement. My confidence is behind the camera. It’s not to say I’m not willing to plunge in and work my butt off, Ma'am.” She had forgotten to use the woman’s name in her nerves. “But the first time you do anything new can be unnerving. Jumping off the highest diving board at the pool for the first time, or holding a snake, or even taking a chance on a new employee. In high school, the problem with getting a job.. was you couldn’t get one without experience. But you also couldn’t get experience without a job. Some people turn out to be wrong for the job, others not so much. Despite any faults or inexperience I come with, I know this is what I’m good at. And I’m really good at it. And passionate. No one better understands this once in a lifetime opportunity better than I do. I could of lied and said I was great with reporters, but I’m not big on lying. I’m actually really bad at it. And you’d find out if I got the job. I’m hoping you’ll realize no one’s perfect. You could hire someone who’s great with PRs, and reporters, and the social politics of it all, I’m sure. But then they’re not paying s much attention to the photography aspect of it all; anyone can learn to deal with reporters.. but not everyone can learn to take pictures like I do.”
Licking her lips, Ainsley had to force herself to sit still, but not stiff; talk calm and not stutter. Talking about herself outside of photography wasn’t something she enjoyed. Talking for long periods of time wasn’t, either. “You’ll see on my resume, I’ve worked with Design Botique - the Alexa Café program - as an instructor. I worked with groups of eight kids, from ten to fifteen, for three consecutive summers.” If being a camp instructor didn’t represent leadership qualities, Ainsley wasn’t sure what did, and she hoped that prerequisite would be enough.
Was this a debate, or an interview? Kiara didn't come here to listen to an interviewee argue her pieces of art. Without question, she would never doubt someone's interpretation of art. She sat there silently, practically allowing herself to be scolded by the young photographer. Licking her lips, she found it harder and harder to hold her tongue, but respectively it seemed as if Ainsley had a lot to say. Honestly, Kiara admired the passion in her voice; the tone she took to defend her craft and the work she put into it. Maybe with nature and scenery, patience was a quality one learned. To her knowledge, or at least the photographers she has known, had a specific style they stuck to and never jumped between styles. She acknowledged that Ainsley held expertise in more than one type of photography skill. So the woman nodded along, taking in Ainsley's argument. "I see what you're saying, and I apologize if I offended you, but that is my interpretation. That's all it was." Kiara wanted to make sure Ainsley understood that she did like what she was presented, but rather, the structure of it was her distaste. The way there was no fluidity in the portfolio. At least transition between the styles.
Shifting in her seat, Kiara took a sharp inhale and settled herself. Remaining cool and professional as possible. "I do understand, I hope you to be aware that this precise and attention to detail won't give you two hours to decide the perfect scene. You'll have way less time for the construction," She informed the other woman, trying to sound less harsh and more matter of factually. "Firsthand I have experienced what photographers have had to go through. Sure, they had their skills and talents and whatnot, but celebrities were their worst critics. Most look at the shots taken of them and approve or reject on the spot. Sometimes, with the wrong photographer, the celebrity will be there for forty-five minutes demanding the perfect candid. This isn't about a beautiful caterpillar transforming into a butterfly. To put it simply, these are clients who want everything right then and there. That's just the way it is, unfortunately," Contently puckering her lips, she tapped a pen against her palm. Why was she being so protective over Ainsley? With the other candidates, Kiara was dismissive and bored, even harsher. Yet here she was, warning Ainsley of the things that may or may not happen. Was she trying to talk her out of taking the job because she secretly wanted her for herself? God, that's so unprofessional.
As Ainsley continued, she was brushing up on the references in her portfolio. Kiara couldn't deny how impressed she was by her recommendations. As someone who has been in the business, she knew people who knew people. The people that Ainsley knew, including her professor, are people other photographers aspired to be. Yet Ainsley was sitting there bold and confident, reminding Kiara of these references without reminding her of their notoriety. That was commendable to say that least. She couldn't deny that. People name dropped all the time, it was her biggest pet peeve. However, Ainsley did it so calm and contently, it didn't bother Kiara at all. Accidentally, she revealed a smile. The corner of her lips lifted upright and she was showing impressed she was. "I've heard of the Alex Cafe Program. I actually know the daughter of the original founder," She confessed with another nod. "And I know the expectations that are put on the instructors and the students," Lifting a brow, she closed the book of references but left it in her lap. Ainsley's prerequisite was more than enough, Kiara was wondering why she would want to work here as opposed to staying in her comfort zone. "I'm sorry, I guess I'm just still curious about you, I apologize. You seem organized, you work well with others, and your list of recommendations could get you a job almost anywhere..."
"I guess I'm just wondering, why here? Why Uproar PR?" Now she was talking aloud. Not really expecting Ainsley to answer her questions. "You know, as you stated, you don't know much about working alongside reporters. Not only that, but your taste seems different from what we're looking for--" Which didn't mean Kiara wanted Ainsley as a photographer any less. "--You're putting your self on the edge here. It's just, um, what's the word." Biting her lip, Kiara thought for a second about what she wanted to say next. Ainsley's first impressions could be explained in a few ways, but Kiara didn't know which one to pick. "Spontaneous, no offense. It's spontaneous. You could make so much money doing what you know, and yet you applied here," Leaning back in her seat, she eyed the other woman observantly. God, she wished she could read her mind. "I'm going to try you out though. When are you free again? I need you to come back tomorrow morning at 5 AM and meet with the other photographers that'll be working the event alongside you. Most importantly, I want you to bring back these binders." She pointed at the ones that were presented to her, not Ainsley's recommendations. "I want your task to be incorporating your taste with the others. See if they can blend together."
"I want an inspiration board. I'll schedule you a meeting with my boss as well and we'll show it to the team that is working on the event. We'll get their opinion. Consider it your working interview. So come prepared and ready to bite everyone's head off."
