In April of 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated at the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. King was a major contributor to the Civil Rights Movement; some may even say he was the leader of the Civil Rights Movement. He had many supporters from celebrities to the lower class. Elvis was a supporter as well. It broke Elvis' heart to know the Dr. King was assassinated only six miles away from his home.
In December of 1968, at the end of Elvis' Comeback Special, he sang the song If I Can Dream in dedication to the memory of Dr. King.
"When things are too dangerous to say sing."
Happy Martin Luther King Day!
