Why I Estimate That Maybe 15% of People in the World Have Legitimately Experienced Love.
“I don’t think love has anything to do with how the other person is. I mean, maybe a little. I think what really matters is you yourself. Let’s say you really liked a self-involved ass. That doesn’t matter. What matters is how that ass makes you feel. If you feel like the best person in the world when you’re with them, that’s what makes you like them. It really isn’t about how good a person they are at all.”
Just read this, and it is absolute malarkey. I mean, to be fair, the author follows it up by referring to the description as “the selfish person’s guide to love,” which is exactly so, but even reading it sets me on fire from the inside. Because there are people who actually think that this is what love is. It’s not.
Love is seeing. Not necessarily things that you see in yourself, because that’s just called extended narcissism. Not things that society has deemed as valuable. But knowing a person, seeing a person. In a way that few else could. In a way that combines someone’s simple, normal, average, beautiful, heart-stopping, evil and horrible characteristics, forming a melody that you can hear and feel, pivoting, rotating, dancing ethereal and golden, finding its home within the deepest recesses of your being. In a way which, for reasons unknown and unmeant to be known, resonate within you. This is the true creation story - this state of being we’ve deemed love. It is entirely about the other person. Of course it involves how that person makes you feel; pesky little underminers oxytocin, norepinephrine and endorphins are involved. But to truly be in love with someone is marked by this. The ability to want someone as your own as though the feeling alone may kill you but to let that someone go if you weren’t what was best for them. True love makes you selfless, not selfish. Not crazy.
