Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is obviously my favorite from the saga, for noticeable reasons. And now that there’s this diabolical heat wave making me melt on the spot, oh well… it’s time to rewatch it. maybe while picturing Philip a little bit more ginger than he is (in fact, he’s not even ginger, but who cares.)

the heat is killing my creativity (and I'm suspecting I have some kind of seasonal depression towards summer, even though it's not that deep... just 38°C that make me dream about autumn... nothing more) but... I'm trying, slowly but surely. I really want to go on with the beach volley project (you see Smoker? yeah.) but I'm also trying to use more traditional mediums on my small sketchbook (angy Meris).

We're getting dangerously close to a more detailed part of the story... I'm pretty nervous about it, anyway! Enjoy!
Meris meets again the Strawhats at Zou, before the group reunites completely, and it's not exactly a sweet reunion, at least not with the cook, Sanji, who seems to not trust her still, even after the events of Fish-man island. Even after having Robin tell all of them about Meris, her mother and how they both helped keep the World Government and the Marines as far as possible from Ohara, for some time. Until their help became useless.
But thanks to her stubborness, because she has a mission, and she kept an eye on the Strawhat on Dressrosa, yes, but now they clearly need more from Meris, who helps Chopper and their hostage, Ceasar, taking care of the hurt citizens of Zou, who were attacked by Jack the Drought and his crew, all poisoned by that terrible toxic gas, makes the blonde realize that she's not like the sirens he's heard about during the years. So Sanji at least lets her operate.
Also, the fact that the blonde doesn't swoon over her, like he does with literally every woman he meets, starts to make her feel a bit self-conscious. Because... if she doesn't provoke any kind of reaction with her mere presence, to a man that is easily attracted to women, it means that something's wrong, right? Maybe because she’s a siren’s daughter and has nothing like the pretty features true sirens have. Of course. Not that she cares about it in an emotional way. But what if she meets another man who reacts just like the blonde cook of the Strawhats? What if she meets a Marine who’s immune to her whole presence? Would she still have a possibility to beat the shit outta them?
Meris also reveals Sanji, Chopper, Nami and Brook that Jinbe thought it would be good to have her there, while he still needed to finish settling some things for Fish-men island, with Big Mom. And everyone trusts Jinbe, so Meris gets a warm welcome from them, especially from Nami and some of the now recovering members of the Mink Tribe, who seem just as curious about her as she is about them.
Meris never really cared about her appearance. Hell, her human disguise still has some uncanny traits that always show just how bad she is in that aspect of being a siren: being a flirty trickster and attracting men wasn't her better skill, but her mother never said anything about it either.
Well, Thalassa, her mother, was one of the biggest sirens that ever existed and that maybe did the trick when she met Meris' father in the past.
And yet the positive (and negative...) traits that got her onto Kid's ship, trusting her fully, never did a thing to attract his attention in another way. Just like Sanji never reacted like he does with ALL women, when he met her the first time and even now. And since she's tired of feeling so self-conscious about it, Meris decides to ask the blonde directly. Who... gives her an answer that she couldn't even imagine.
She doesn't need protection.
It's not like Robin needs protection, but the fact that she ate a fruit makes her vulnerable from time to time, because of the water, he says. While Nami, well... Nami needs protection, and that does something to him. While he respects women, he's also a gentleman, and when a woman MAY need him, he just can't avoid the attraction he feels for them.
But her? She doesn't need protection, or at least... that's what it looks like to him. She's a siren. She can speak and have every man at her feet. She just survived the chaos they created at Dressrosa and not one of them even noticed her presence. Meris can swim, in this world nearly submerged by water, she can also walk, she's agile on her feet... she doesn't need any help.
"But this doesn't mean that you're not attractive. In a way, these skills make you appear dangerous and... some men find that interesting! It's only a matter of time before you'll find the right way to use all of this (he indicates all of her form, with the hand that's holding his cigarette) and have men act like I usually do. No doubt."
And at those words, Meris just nods, for she doesn't have the right words to keep going with the conversation. Her eyes are now wide in surprise at that. And it seems that men have more shades in them than she could ever think of. She has a lot of traits and can use them in ways she never thought about. And the one who made her understand that was... the blonde cook? Absurd. She's actually learning more from humans while staying beside them, eating with them, taking care of them, no matter if they're pirates, men, women, children, people of the Mink tribe. Not even her mother taught her so many unpredictable things as the ones she's hearing and learning from them. That puts a smile on her freckled face.
But after returning to have lighter thoughts in her scaly head, things don't stay positive for too long. Sanji gets kidnapped by Bege, because he has some business with Big Mom, apparently.
Only after that, Rufy and the other members of the Strawhats arrive at Zou, along with Trafalgar Law, since he was meant to meet with his crew there in any case. Meris runs to Robin first and then notices that there are other people with them: two samurai and a kid, from Wano. Who has a connection with Zou's citizens? Someone they’ve been hiding from him? And for such a reason, Jack of the Beast Pirates attacks Zunisha, again. And as the fight seems to get only worse, Momo, the Wano kid, orders the enormous and mythic elephant, Zunisha, who has Zou entirely onto his back, to defend himself against Jack's ships.
Meris is shocked by that, by the fact that also the captain of the Strawhats could hear the elephant's voice and that reminds her of some stories her mother told her. Something about a certain Joyboy and the rebellion that happened many, many years ago.
And her mother always spoke so greatly about that Joyboy man, the Poneglyphs and other things somehow resembling... this young man, this Monkey D. Luffy.
After the victory against Jack, the Strawhats, the reunited Heart Pirates and the entire Mink tribe celebrate for days, while also helping Chopper taking care of Zunisha, discovering new things about the Wano people they met at Punk Hazard and Dressrosa, finding out Zou's people have been hiding a red Poneglyph for many years, waiting for the right people to trust its information with.
This is getting bigger. Thinks Meris, while Momo reveals that he's the son of the late Kozuki Oden, a great man that also sailed with the famous White Beard for years and also witnessed with his own eyes Laughtale, the Island where Gol D. Roger hid the greatest treasure of all time: the One Piece.
Last time she heard important information of that kind, an island was destroyed. And if this red Poneglyph ends in the wrong hands, well... pirates like Blackbeard can reach the One Piece before them and certainly hurt innocents along the road...
And the World Government won't stay still too.
And why is she even worrying about all of that? Why did she agree to have a look at the Strawhats on Jinbe's behalf? And why does she find all of this so interesting? Maybe because her mother used to tell her about how the world was before the World Government decided they wanted to control everything and everyone. Maybe because she saw people die because they wanted to discover the truth about the past.
Maybe because she doesn't want to keep living in a world like this and feels the need to change things, like she's trying to do with sirens, how people see them and how they are more than simply "deadly" creatures, as they all say. And how they became was just a survival response to what the World Government tried to do to them in the early days.
Also, who wants to keep living in a world where everything you do or say can provoke the World Government's rage?
But her thoughts are interrupted as Luffy asks her if she's with them, with the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai alliance-What? She didn't listen to the last part of the conversation, so...
"Well... I-I believe Jinbe would accept, since after he's done with his business, he'll join your crew in any case."
"But I didn't ask for Jinbe, I asked to you! You in?!" What?! I'm not even part of a crew! Do I have a say in that? Thinks Meris, furrowing her eyebrows and assuming a distressed expression, making Robin chuckle, along with part of the Strawhats too.
"Also!" Luffy doesn't even let her elaborate an answer, that he's already speaking again. "It doesn't make sense, what's going to happen when Jinbe will be in my crew? You'll leave? No way! He's like... your dad, so why shouldn't you join us too?"
And now she's definitely confused. Usopp just starts laughing out loud, along with Zoro and Nami, while Meris narrows her eyes at the young captain, ready to tell him that Jinbe is not her-actual-dad and that she has a plan too, about the sirens, about stopping the demonizing campaign that has been going on for too long against them...
"It's useless." Now it's Trafalgar Law who's speaking, with his deep voice and absolutely no will to live in his tone. "Don't think about it too much, or he's going to torment you until you give him a positive answer."
"But what if my answer isn't positive?"
"He'll make sure you'll give him a positive answer." He replies, with even less will to live in his tone. And he seems to speak from his own experience...
Aside from the unexpected reasoning the young pirate is giving... Meris doesn't find a reason on why she should refuse either.
"I'll join the... alliance. And your crew too. Gladly." She answers, only to obtain a bone crushing hug from the captain, who nearly squeezes the life out of her, along with the toxin liquid her skin produces.
So, Meris becomes part of the Strawhats. And she can't wait to see Jinbe's face when she tells him. Hoping it'll be as moved and relieved as Robin's one was, the moment she accepted Luffy's proposal. Maybe a little bit also like Usopp's happy cries as he adds himself to the bone crushing hug, with Robin using her devil fruit to basically crush her too. Lovingly as always 😅.
The crew needs to split, because there's no way Luffy will leave Sanji with Big Mom. Fair enough, the young man cares about his crew so damn much, that Meris starts to think if she could've done something to help Sanji, but she stops that train of thoughts right away. It's not efficient, damage has already been done. And in any case, whatever Big Mom ordered him to do, everyone is sure the cook won't ever leave them: the crew he loves and cares about so much and his dream to find the All Blue.
And the rest of them agrees. Meris too. And while she thinks it would be better for her to follow Luffy, Nami, Brook and Chopper to Tottoland, Big Mom's territory, so maybe she'll have the chance to also meet there Jinbe, the captain disagrees and sends her with the group that will arrive at Wano first.
And while no one understood the very reason for that, Meris got it the moment they approached Wano's waterfalls and their incredible violence. The fish men combat style she uses, along with some giant carps, helps the group arrive in Wano safe and sound.
As the group wakes up on the shore, and starts to think about where to hide the small ships they used to arrive there, Kin'emon, the Wano man the Strawhats met at Punk Hazard, along with the little man Momo, and Raizo, a ninja the Mink tribe was hiding from Jack the Drought and the main reason they were attacked by him those many times, want to talk to her in private.
Wano closed their borders many years before, so they don't know about fishmen, mermaids, nor sirens. Aside from legends where obviously the spirits coming from the sea that have the face of a young woman aren't welcome by them. Meris understands very well that she'll have to change her appearance, so no one will suspect a thing about her.
It takes her an entire day, but in the end Meris manages to develop a better disguise, one that has everyone surprised, in a good way, by how pretty it seems. And Robin smiles widely at it, since it resembles her mother so much now, after all the practice Meris put into it. Her disguise still has the red irises, the silver hair and the sunkissed skin of her wanted poster, but they're in Wano, a country that doesn;t know a thing about them all or what's happening around the world.
There's no way she's going to be recognized.
But to be sure, like her, everyone needs to wear a disguise: they all change their name and start to dress like people in Wano do. Everyone finds a job in order to blend themselves in the right way, an most importantly they all try to gain information about Kaido.
Where he lives, how he operates, who works for him at the Flower Capital, and such.
And Meris' disguise consists in being an assistant at Kyoshiro's pleasure house, she isn't involved into becoming a geisha and entertain the men who pay to be in the same room of wonderful and elegant ladies, she merely acts as a waiter, bringing all the geishas what they need in order to keep them and the guests entertained, day by day, night by night.
A convenient occupation. Between her and Robin, who also works in the same ambient, but as a traditional geisha for another boss, the crew has a good amount of information about Kyoshiro, who's not only Meris' boss, but the head of the yakuza, who trusts blind loyalty to the cruel shogun Kozuki Orochi.
And while this is a convenient occupation, she can't stay relaxed in that routine for more than a week, because during a visit from a giant man with long, green hair and a quite goofy hat, Sasaki, a member of the Tobiroppo, a special group of the six strongest Shinuchi of Kaido, she catches his attention. She just listens as the half-fishman starts to tell Kyoshiro about how he used his devil's fruit ability, that consists in transforming himself into a dinosaur, a triceratop to be precise, to block yet another brawl the previous night, between some of the lower graded Beast Pirates. Meris studies him and decides to try her luck, for gaining his trust may become quite the smart move, since he's one of the best men under Kaido's alliance. So, she asks questions about his technique and his devil fruit.
Her genuine (or well... rather smart move) interest towards those "prehistoric, yet modern techniques", as Sasaki calls them, has her taken away from Kyoshiro's sight that same evening and become one of Black Maria's assistant at Onigashima castle, an island just outside Wano where Kaido built his home. That's only an excuse for Sasaki to talk more with her about what they have in common, especially the fact that he's half a fish-man and she pretends to be one too, as she reveals to him, with a hand on her heart, not revealing anything about her siren identity still and playing the kind and usually silent part she thought would fit her for this undercover mission.
But truly, at Onigashima castle the atmosphere is different. And the amount of strong haki distributed all around her makes her doubt she can even do this. Not because she doesn't have the abilities to hide under a disguise, but because she feels an unsettling presence there.
As if a natural predator is in Kaido's crew and is one of his best men.
But siren's natural predators are humans, mostly. Well. Lunarians too. But they're extinct after all. Right?
The days pass at the Oniganshima castle, Meris listens intently and patiently not only to Sasaki, but also to other Beast Pirates members, sometimes charming them a little, since it's oh, so easy with the lower ranked Beast Pirates, it seems, to know more about gossips and whatnot, so she can secretly inform the Strawhats with enigmatic letters only Robin can read and understand.
Things start to change even before Luffy's arrival in Wano, when she notices another member of the Tobiroppo, has his eyes on her from afar, when he's not teaming up with Basil Hawkins about some matter at the Capital. Meris starts to doubt about how defiant she's being, maybe it's not enough? Did the man notice something about her? Also, wasn't he one of the best pirates of the Worst Generation, along with Kid and Luffy?
But she pays him no particular attention, since he doesn't even dare to start a conversation with her, especially when she's keeping company to Sasaki, thankfully.
One evening, as Orochi, the current shogun of Wano, is welcomed as a guest from Kaido, the damn scum starts to blabber something about what to do with the crew of the "red one", now that also his second in command is out of the way. Meris' heart sink at those words, while she's serving them food and drinks, and she immediately thinks Orochi is talking about Eustass Kid, so she excuses herself from the room, closing the wooden sliding door behind her, only to keep listening their conversation about how the Red one was now imprisoned at Udon and his second in command was a laughing fool, thanks to the damaged fruit the shogun gave to him some time before.
Meris walks away, feeling bad, nearly stumbling onto her feet, having her legs weak, feeling terribly for what happened to Kid and Killer, their crew, even after their lost fight against Shanks the Red... and she hopes Dawn wasn't with them when Kaido met them.
Could this still be her fault? Even after all this time? Because she left them? Because she hadn't enough trust in Kid? In all of them?
Meris doesn't even notice this presence, this giant man leaning onto the corridor with his arms crossed, until he clears his throat and has her turning around to look at him in a way that should have him fly away from her instantly. Her emotions betray her, so her eyes return to their normal form, with black sclera, as the siren glares at him. Even if for a moment.
And yet, the man stays there, approaching her directly, after days passed observing her silently, asking her questions.
And indeed he is one of the Worst Generation, his name being Drake something, if she recalls correctly. She doesn't want to deal with him right now.
Meris doesn't quite listen to his words, she just stares at him, while spiraling in pure guilty thoughts for what happened to Killer, Kid and their entire crew. It's absurdly complicated for her, because she thinks she did the right thing, for her. And maybe, if they've listened to her, things would've been different, right? Right?
But Meris and her mother thought the same when they lived at Ohara, when they protected the island for many years, before a complete disaster happened, their friends have been killed and Meris got her wings cut off by a marine who maybe had nothing better to do that same day.
Meris didn't even notice that she turned around to face him completely and is now just staring at this pirate, with wide eyes, like a deer caught in the headlights. Panicked by responsibilities that aren't even hers to worry about.
At that, the giant man then asks, with a tone so soft that makes her shiver, if she's feeling alright. Meris gasps, noticing him bending down to speak with her in such a way, and startled she just walks away.
Sighing in relief when she doesn't hear his steps following her.
And feeling ashamed because she ran away like a damsel in distress, from a man she could've probably at least paralize with her tail.
Oh boi. So. We're in Wano, baby ✌️✨ I thought about stopping this part when Meris accepts Rufy's proposals, but... I was greedy and I then ended up writing more. Maybe a little bit too hasty? I don't know, you tell me! But I was indeed excited to start telling more about Meris being in Wano, you see her in her natural ambient, being undercover and trying to obtain informations. And you see her in pure panic... 😓but things will get better, messier, but better!

Anastasia comes from the Greek Αναστασία and it means "resurrection" Fotiá comes from the Greek word Φωτιά and it means "fire"☝️
Sister to Rosalind and Ophelia, she punishes humans that commit crimes filled with pride, wrath and sloth. Even if she's the first one sinning with pride most of the time, and between her thirst for these kind of crimes and Rosalind with the ones regarding infedelty in marriage, Ophelia has a lot to do in order to have at least some humans still walking on Earth...
we support women's right, but most importantly women's wrongs
Her gift is pyrokinesis, she loves wine, even if she's a lightweight aaand if I go on I might never post this. I'll take my time to expand a bit more lore in the future!
