The clock had struck midnight, gathering with his wife, his brother,and many of their friends at a party, to welcome the new year. Mako turned happily towards Asami, smiling, "Happy New Year!" Then proceeded to pull her in for a kiss, holding her close, wanting happiness for both, on the oncoming year.

Asami was caught up in the festivities with her family and friends. But when Mako turned to look at her, everything else faded into the back. "Happy New Year!" She smiled back, happily melting into his arms. They kissed as the clock finished its chimes and party poppers exploded around them. She couldn't think of a better way to start the new year.

He saw her face light up, seeing her beautiful smile. Her words holding truth and very much sincerity. He was met with another kiss from her lips chastely, as his arms still held her to him. Mako chuckled as well, hearing her giggle. "I'm thinking Beifong and Saikhan are just going to accept that we are a thing. You are mine and I am yours. That's all there is to it. You and me. "

Asami had never been part of a team before. Even her past relationships she had to look out for herself. Looking into Mako's ember eyes, she knew that wasn't the truth anymore. "I think I'm in love with you, " she whispered almost shyly. "And I think Lin and Saikhan will be happy for me...at least Lin will be right away. Saikhan will come around."

A blush crept into Asami’s cheeks. Their lips were puffy from the intense kissing they had just parted from. His words swam around in her head. 

"I think I’m falling for you."

Why did Mako have to say that? She wasn’t his to fall for. They shouldn’t even be in each other’s arms, sitting on his couch with the lights dimmed. The love and lust gleaming between emerald and gold shouldn’t have existed. But it did. 

"Oh Mako…" Asami brushed his hair back with every intention of walking away. She wasn’t right for him. He deserved better. 

"I think I’m falling for you too." The words escaped her before she could stop them. Instead of pulling back, Asami leaned in. Her lips found his again but with a greater urgency. 

Her fingers fumbled with the buttons of shirt and she could feel Mako’s hands on her back, bringing down her zipper. It didn’t feel wrong. For once, everything finally felt right.
