All my Magnagothica Necromancers compiled!
Even now, the guilt festered. To turn against the Benefactor, to deny him, was anathema to her kind. They were not made to disobey. And yet, what else could they have done? What option had he left them? What option had he left her?
Haha, yes! Good for you, Igori!
I spent a good part of the Clonelord wondering how Bile would react to his New Men turning on him. He’s always insisted that his job is to make them perfect and have them supplant him and his kind. It seemed to me that the New Men turning on him and defeating him could be the ultimate proof of his success in his mind. I knew he would never reach that point on his own—his Slaaneshi obsession is perfecting the New Men—but a successful revolt seemed like it would fit too cleanly with his heartfelt beliefs about the New Men.
But the further I got in the book, the more convinced I became that Bile’s narcissism would never accept that scenario, for all his vaunted ideals. Just as an abusive parent clings to their children for the sweet, sweet rush of control, so too is Bile unable to stomach disobedience—and therefore independence. That’s the real reason why he shunned Clonegrim—he couldn’t stand the clone’s drive for independence. Bile needs control. It’s why he cherishes the New Men, because they are (until now, apparently) slavishly obedient to his word. It’s why he allows the vatborn to worship him, despite his insistence on atheism. And as soon as a group of the New Men aren’t so slavishly obedient—well, here we are, post civil war, in a separate settlement.
Igori. Matriarch of the Gland Hounds. Before her glory days.
She's such a great character and her complicated relationship with Fabius is so damn interesting to read.
At the beginning, she still seems like a very simple weapon. As if Fabius himself does not really see his Gland Hounds as more than tools. But little by little you can witness how the Chief Apothecary's respect for his creation grows. He is still a merciless Darwinist - those who cannot survive the necessary battles on their own have no right to live - but gradually you can feel him becoming increasingly fascinated. How he perceives Igori on a more and more elevated, almost eye-to-eye level. And then when the break happens and both defy each other in their respective kingdoms, it is clear that the balance of power has really shifted. Fabius is now more of a god and creator than an employer. And Igori and her people are subjects of a benevolent dictator-god, but one who is always in need of their cooperation, as they are still loyal, even if their faith is quite pragmatic. I am not really happy with the ending. But I guess I'm in good company there, as even Josh Reynolds seemed to find it less than ideal.
2: Harvesting
Saqqara sullenly pulls towards himself a lengthy piece of parchment, which until a minute ago contained enough text to wear out even the most vehement agnostic, but is now just a slowly curling, acid-burnt scrap. At the very least, Arrian suspects Saqara is scowling. Hard to tell when the Word Bearer is fully armoured. Unusual. You can almost forget how different he looks when he wears the dark blood-red of his legion. It's been a while since they've been away from Urum. No need to get canned too often. To hunt the mutants. Or sometimes for visitors. And then for this. Arrian is glad for his sealed helmet, breathes deeply. "Now get on with it! I think he's thinking about jumping!" Saqqara sounds whiny. Rightly so. He is aware that he is the distraction so that Khorag's demon dog doesn't cause the whole garden to wither, and that doesn't suit the diabolist. But there is no other way. Khorag snorts in offence. "Don't be like that, son of Lorgar! Paz'uz loves you!" - "Oh what good fortune for me! The warmth of Nurgle beams at me through him! Fuck you!" Before an argument can break out, Arrian pushes Khorag on. "Come on, back there. Then we're done!" The Plague Marine gurgles a laugh and heads to the back of the arboretum to continue searching for the seed pods he wants to harvest for a potent neurotoxin. Arrian makes a placating wave motion towards Saqqara, who answers him with an obscene gesture and looks as if not much is missing before he starts testing how Paz'uz holds up against the demons in his bottles. The Shard of Nurgle, on the other hand, is unaware of how little the object of his love appreciates his closeness, and continues to try to climb the lab table where Saqqara has sought refuge from the demon's caustic secretion. Khorag stretches, well-insulated scissors in hand, balancing on tiptoe. Arrian watches the poison master anxiously. The not inconsiderable bulk of the huge Plague Marine looms before him like a wall of rust and rot. Khorag stretches. Groans "Another … inch … AAAAHHH!" Things happen simultaneously. Khorag falls like a particularly disgusting tree. Hits Arrian, who throws himself to the side, as extended contact with his Nurgle-touched colleague is not really pleasant and at best only highly infectious. Rolls into a pile of plant pots, which crash onto a mobile table, which makes its way to a small vivarium of excited spider monkey mutants and crashes into its glass. Paz'uz, feeling spurred on by the chaos, pushes his not inconsiderable bulk onto the lab table, where Saqqara uncorks a bottle of glowing pink mist with an astonishingly high-pitched cry of "Disgusting!!!".
On the balustrade, Igori leans forward tensely. The grin on her scarred face is wide enough that you could crack her head open on it. Her Maker also takes another step forward, watching the growing chaos. His face remains expressionless, but there is a suspicious glint in his narrow eyes. As the Damonette from Saqqara's bottle, instead of lunging at Paz'uz, begins to climb up the Word Bearer to get out of reach of the slimy Nurgle hound as well, while Arrian tries to pluck screaming monkeys from a carnivorous tree and the fallen Death Guard, half-sunk into mulch, bellows "Help me up, fucking twats!", Fabius reaches into the pocket of his lab coat, places a few coins on the balustrade. "Ten on Khorag being the last one back on his feet".
Paz'uz, Khorag Sinj's splinter of Nurgle

Igori: This is Consortium Radio, and I am your host Igori, bringing the sounds of ancient Terra to you, the lost and damned. Now, if there are no more requests--
Saqqara [strained]: Ahem--
Igori [exasperated]: Saqqara, we’re not just going to play The Mountain Goats again. You get your own two hour show once a week for your spiritual sadboy music. How did you even get in here?
Saqqara [gritting teeth]: Something is trying to... get through.... it wants...
Melodic, sultry voice: Hiiiiii! This is Trill -- I'm new to the materium, love your show.
Igori [flustered]: Oh! Thank you! What can I do for -- that is, is there anything I play for you?
Trill: Can I get something bouncy? Something you could dance to -- I have to settle a bet.
Igori: Honey, if you are what I think you are, then I’d love to make you bounce. Be sure to let me know how that bet works out, and call me direct next time, it’s weird hearing your voice come out of the priest.
Saqqara [gasping for air]: Send picts!
Igori: Corpse’s Throne, Saqqara, don’t be creepy.
