Ike Willis, Longtime Singer and Guitarist in Frank Zappa’s Bands, Dies at 70

- “He was one of the most incredible singers I have (had) the honor to work with,” former FZ drummer Chad Wackerman says

Ike Willis, the longtime singer and guitarist in Frank Zappa’s studio and road ensembles, died May 16 at 70, his family said in a statement to Rolling Stone magazine.

No cause of death was given.

“His years of collaboration with Frank Zappa made him a cherished figure within the Zappa community, where fans embraced him not only for his talent, but for his generosity, wit and the joy he brought to every stage,” the statement read.

Willis worked with Zappa from 1978 to 1988, singing the title characters in Joe’s Garage and Thing-Fish and acting as Zappa’s on-stage foil.

“His ability to be creative and humorous gave Frank so much joy on stage,” former Zappa drummer Chad Wackerman said.

“He was a talented guitarist, but more than that, he was one of the most incredible singers I have (had) the honor to work with. Some nights on stage his singing would give me chills.”

Willis spent the post-Zappa years singing and playing with a variety of of tribute acts including Dweezil Zappa and the Stinkfoot Orchestra; the latter called Willis’ death “a huge loss to the greater music community, (and) personal for us.”

“As those who knew him can attest, despite his flaws, he was a warm, genuine and caring person who lived to perform,” the band said.

Otra baja sensible más en la música, Ike Willis, cantante y guitarrista que formó parte de la banda de Frank Zappa a finales de los 70 y durante los ochenta.

El primer proyecto de Willis con Zappa fue la ópera rock en tres partes «Joe’s Garage», publicada en 1979. Veo que también participó en «Tinseltown Rebellion» (1981), «You Are What You Is» (1981), «Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch» (1982), «The Man From Utopia» (1983), «Them or Us» (1984), «Thing-Fish» (1984) y «Frank Zappa Meets the Mothers of Prevention» (1985). Además, tocó la guitarra rítmica en los tres álbumes de «Shut Up ‘n Play Yer Guitar». Conozco cosas aquí y allá de la carrera de Zappa, pero es inabarcable, a no ser que te olvides del resto y estés a ello una buena temporada. O dos o tres.

Me ha sorprendido esta versión de "I´m The Walrus" de los Beatles en directo en Barcelona 1988 en la que Willis, peluche en mano, escupe la letra entera de la famosa y excéntrica canción de John Lennon sin titubear y no sin cierto cachondeo (él y Zappa).
