Ellis + Fingertips

Tags: established relationship; picnic date; Ellis being Ellis; no pronouns for reader.

Using one hand to hold yours and the other to carry a basket with food, Ellis guides you through the woods near the castle, searching for a good spot to have a picnic. After a few minutes, you finally find a suitable spot, and you place the blanket on the ground and sit down.

Ellis sits beside you and doesn’t waste any time taking everything out of the basket, a huge smile on his face, and you can’t help but giggle at his boyish ways. He happily spreads jam on a baguette and hands it to you, and you both start eating, talking about random topics and making new plans for future dates.

He soon finds himself distracted by watching you. The way the sun hits you, the soft wind blowing your hair, the sweet scent of the flowers enveloping both of you... it’s all so good, and it makes him so happy.

You don’t notice his tender smile or how his eyes seem to have hearts in them from how lovingly he stares at you. You’re focused on wanting to return his previous kind gesture by spreading his favorite jam on a piece of baguette. You turn around with a bright smile to give it to him, only then noticing how intently he was staring at you. He reaches out, noticing your fingers covered in jam, and grabs your hand, bringing it to his lips to lick your fingers clean.

“Ellis!” you exclaim, blinking in surprise.

“You had jam on your fingers,” he says simply, a playful smile on his lips. You laugh with him for a moment, and then his face turns serious. His twilight eyes shift to your fingers as he plays with them, his voice a tone lower. “Hey... how happy are you right now?”

“I am very happy,” you answer, already knowing where your boyfriend wants to go with this. “But I could be happier.”

“Mmm, I see,” he murmurs, his lips brushing against your fingertip as he places a soft kiss there. “I’ll have to keep trying to make you happy then. Even if it takes the rest of our lives.”

“I can’t wait for it.”

You share a knowing, soft smile. You squeeze his hand in reassurance, and he kisses the rest of your fingertips, a silent vow of his promise.

Harrison looked up from his book to see his partner eyeing him with an intensity that both concerned and intrigued him.

“What’s with that look on your face?” Harrison asked, amused. After slipping a bookmark between the pages of his novel, Harrison set the book down and moved in front of her.

“Oh, nothing!” She replied, smiling sweetly up at him. 

“Yeah, I don’t buy it,” Harry replied with a gentle flick to her forehead. “I don’t even need my curse to be able to tell that you're lying.” 

She pouted. “Can’t you just let me have this one?”

“If you want to sneak something by me, you’re just going to have to improve your poker face, sweetheart.” Harrison’s smirk was positively debonair.

“That’s not fair.”

“You’re just a bad liar. It’s one of my favorite things about you.” 

Her pout somehow became even more adorable. Her cheeks flushed a deep pink and she looked away.

“Hey now,” Harrison chided, and reached for her chin to gently, but firmly, turn her head back towards him. “I’m being serious. Your honesty is one of your most attractive features.” 

The Fairytale Keeper’s blush grew even darker. “Harry,” she whined. “You can’t just say things like that.” 

“And why not?” Harrison asked with mock innocence. “I thought you liked it when I told you the truth.”  Her eyes darted around, avoiding eye contact. She would have turned her face away entirely if it weren’t for Harry’s fingers securely holding her chin.

“I do, but…” 

“But?” Harry’s eyes sparkled with affectionate mischief. 

“But it’s embarrassing when you compliment me so freely.” 

“That’s what makes it so fun,” Harrison replied with his usual teasing smirk. “When I tease you, your cheeks turn this adorable shade of pink. They almost resemble my second favorite thing in this world: strawberry milk.” He punctuated his sentence with a sweet kiss to her very pink cheek.

“How do I know you aren't just messing with me?” She asked, petulance lacing her voice.

“You're just going to have to trust me, aren't you?” Harrison said, releasing her chin and pressing another kiss to her forehead. She sighed half-heartedly.

Suddenly, her eyes shot back up to Harry’s, the pout traded in favor of a perplexed frown.

“Wait, hold on. Second favorite?”

“Second favorite,” he confirmed and pulled her into his arms. He rested his chin on top of her head. “My favorite thing in the world is you.”

People always say actions speak louder than words. 

Intentions can easily be hidden with embellished statements or fancy adjectives or sweet nothings; a compliment here, an exaggeration there. It is far more difficult to obscure falsities behind one’s actions. 

Harrison Gray is no exception to this. 

The Curse of the Lying Fox certainly results in a disproportionately high number of spoken falsehoods. However, though his voice will oft facilitate untruth, his gentle touches belie the soft cadence of his words. 

The truths that his words obfuscate are made clear by the sincerity behind everything he does. A guiding hand to the back when walking together, the way his gaze would settle on her from across the room; Harrison’s actions betrayed an honesty that he could not speak aloud. He would take her into his arms when he returned from work and press a tender kiss to the top of her head in greeting. When she was sad, Harrison would brush his lips across her cheeks or her forehead. When he was working, Harrison would often return home with small gifts such as flowers or a trinket he spotted in a store that he thought she would enjoy. No one could mistake the things Harrison does for anything other than the actions of a man in love.

Sometimes she found herself doubting Harrison’s words, but she could never deny the love and care that he bestowed upon her day after day.

When she met Harrison, she didn’t expect him to so quickly become an irreplaceable facet of her existence. He is a standard; an expectation in her life. Where she goes, Harrison is soon to follow. Her future is factually bound to his. 

Harrison may not be the most honest man out there, but he was hers, and he loved her unconditionally. She wouldn’t have him any other way.

Note: I wrote this as a sort of character study with no particular pairing in mind. That said, if I were to apply a pairing to it, I would say it probably suits Jude or William more than the others. I'd be interested to know who you think it applies to!

Four letters. L. O. V. E. 

Insignificant. Puny. Meaningless. Truly so paltry that to speak them into existence takes  a fraction of a second.

And yet..

Those four letters somehow manage to describe these feelings that have wormed their way into my very being, that all other configurations of the English language allow to slip through its grasp. No other alignment of characters is able to name this feeling.

I feel them in my very soul; like shackles chaining me to this mortal existence that my cursed destiny is to shed.

Love has raised empires and toppled them indiscriminately. Love is a fickle mistress; it comes to those who seek it least and escapes those that spend their lives searching for it.

Love is said to be the deepest, purest emotion that mankind can feel. 

Is a villain like me truly capable of something so untainted? Giving away the last part of myself that remains buried so deep that even my sins are incapable of sullying it?

… I like to think so.
