"MVC, two minutes out!" Lena calls out to Jack from the nurse's station. Jack gives her up a thumbs up and goes to grab a disposable gown.
When the trauma arrived, the paramedics were bagging an intubated woman who had a swollen face, cuts and bruises everywhere.
"Unnamed female, was driving the car when she got t-boned at an intersection. The airbags deployed, started crashing on the way in. There was a booster seat in the back with a seven year old boy in the back. Minor abrasions but really shaken up." The head paramedic says while wheeling the gurney into a trauma room. Shen and Parker already going to help as Jack finally follows.
You and Theo were at home, safe.
But there Theo appeared with a paramedic. Theo looked exactly like a young Jack with auburn hair and hazel eyes.
"Daddy!" Theo runs to Jack who scoops him up in his arms.
"I'm here, buddy. I'm here." Jack says, his arms around his son.
"I want Mommy." Theo sobs and Jack felt his heart sink to his stomach. You were in that fucking trauma room. And he couldn't do anything about it.
Walsh enters the Pitt and heads to the trauma room. She doesn't comment on Jack holding Theo. Emery would argue with Jack about many things but they had each other's backs. Plus you kept Jack's grumpy ass in check.
"I know. But Shen and Parker and Walsh are taking care of your mom." Jack says with more conviction than he felt. But Theo needed him.
"Let's go get you cleaned up." Jack says before carrying Theo to Peds and setting him down.
Jack cleans up Theo's injuries and distracts him. Well tries to at least.
Jack sits on a rolling stool beside Theo's bed, watching him doze off because his adrenaline had worn off.
"Your mom's gonna be okay, I know she will." Jack says. The colorful animals on the wall seemed to mock him with their smiling faces.
You were in a room. Walsh had to take you to surgery but you were alive. Jack had sat at your bedside with Theo laying against his chest. Rules be damned.
Everything ached. Where were you? Theo!
Where's Theo!
Your eyes fly open and you scan your surroundings. Sterile and cold. A hospital.
"Theo?" You call out, your voice cracking from lack of use.
"Hey, honey." Jack says, kissing your forehead.
"What happened?" You ask as Jack adjusts Theo in his arms.
"Car accident, you got t-boned. Theo's okay. Just scared." Jack says, nodding to the child in his arms.
"Thank God. When can I get out of here?" You ask and Jack snorts without thinking. It was just so you.
"You just had surgery from internal bleeding. Let's focus on getting out of bed first." Jack says and you nod.
"Alright then." You say and Theo stirs in Jack's arms.
"Mommy!" Theo exclaims when he sees you and practically jumps into your arms which makes you groan.
"Hey, buddy." You say before brushing a piece of hair from Theo's eyes.
"Theo, be careful with your mom right now." Jack admonishes but you're just content to be here right now.
Knowing that your boys were safe.
"I don't break that easily, Jack." You say as Theo snuggles into your side.
"Don't scare me like that again? I don't think my heart could take it." Jack jokes but you could hear the fear beneath it.
"I won't. I guess my car's totaled huh?" You joke and Jack scoffs.
"Absolutely it is. I'm just glad you two are okay." Jack says before you squeeze his hand.
A knock on the door interrupts the moment. It was Shen and Parker with an overstuffed and most definitely overpriced teddy bear from the gift shop.
"Just came to check on you and Theo." Shen says before taking a sip of his Dunkin drink.
"How much did that cost?" You ask and Parker shrugs.
"Not important." She says and Jack scoffs at them. It was nice that they cared about his family.
"Well thank you. Go get some rest." You say, waving them off.
You yawn before settling back down.
"Get some sleep, Jack." You say before falling asleep yourself.
Would you be open to writing Jack Abbott x reader! Maybe she’s Robby’s ex or franks ex something juicy that causes some tension! ILY!
Oh anon! Thank you for the kind words.
Let me work this!!!
"I don't like the way he's looking at you."
A/N: Okay, it's not Robby or Frank because that seems like more mess than Jack would want (TO ME) so and I don't know what has crawled into my mind because GIMMIE THAT TRAUMATIZED MAN (the age gap is so ILLEGAL)
Warnings: Jack and reader are in a weird limbo relationship area, reader works in the Pitt, fem!reader, reader is the ex-girlfriend of a doctor, Jack Abbot is JEALOUS, miscommunication in a way, arguing, reader has boundaries™, ex-boyfriend is closer in age to reader and he's a general surgery guy (I'm boring I know), cursing, reader drives Jack up the WAZOO, kissing

Jack had no right to be jealous. None. You weren't his girlfriend so he couldn't be jealous when your ex came down to the Pitt for a consultation on a fucking bowel impaction. The guy was young and charming, he made you laugh. Laugh like a lovestruck puppy at some mediocre joke.
Jack kept giving Logan or Luke, whatever his fucking name was, a look of contempt despite the surgeon not even looking at him. McSurgeon was too busy looking at you.
So yeah his boxers were in a bit of a twist. No one has to know that though.
Shen and Parker weren't idiots. Hell no, Jack Abbot was their attending for crying out loud. The man who donated blood while working on someone during PittFest, the man who shut up a drunk man with a single look during a full moon. They were small potatoes compared to the badassery of Jack. Still they noticed the way he looked at the surgeon and the way he looked at you. Contempt one second and adoration the next.
"Five bucks that they're already dating." Shen comments and Parker smirks.
"If they're not they will be by tonight. You're on." Parker says and they shake hands before going their separate ways.
Logan left the Pitt after his consultation on the patient with the impacted bowel and said the patient would be in line. You had thanked him and laughed at an inside joke between you two. Your relationship hadn't ended horribly, you two just didn't fit and agreed on that like grown ups.
You look over at Jack who was glaring daggers at the back of Logan's head like Logan had slapped him across the face. It made you mad. Logan had a fiancee, a wonderful woman because you had met her at a donor ball. They were going to get married soon.
Jack hadn't even defined your relationship with him. Stuck in a weird relationship purgatory.
You scoff at the stupidity of it. Logan was at least a decade younger than Jack and yet Logan had the balls to propose to Penelope.
Jack had grabbed your wrist and tugged you into an empty room before locking the door.
"Scandalous." You snark and rolling your eyes. It was low hanging fruit but you were petty.
"That's not what's happening here and you know it." Jack says before leaning against the door.
"Pretty sure this is hostage taking. Let me out, I have work to do." You say, trying to shove Jack from the door.
"Do you love him?" Jack asks, still blocking the door handle. You laugh.
"He's engaged. We broke up over three years ago. Contrary to popular belief not all relationships end badly. So if you'll excuse me!" You say before trying again to shove Jack but it was like trying to shove a brick wall.
"You didn't answer the question." Jack says and you sigh.
"No. I don't love him, I care about you but you refuse to even define what we are which makes me sound like an insecure twenty year old. I don't deserve to be stuck in this weird limbo where you get jealous and then refuse to even call me your girlfriend. That's juvenile and I will not stand for it. I don't care how happy you make me." You say, Jack had to know that you weren't a doormat.
Jack turns his head to the side before looking at back at you. "Okay, then. Will you be my girlfriend?" Jack says, stuffing his pride down even though he's a middle aged man asking you to be his girlfriend. It felt humiliating but he wasn't going to lose you.
"Now was that so hard?" You grin before Jack kissing you.
"Smartass." He retorts but his words held no true bite, only adoration.
"Correction. Your smartass, get it right, Dr. Abbot." You say and then head out the door since Jack had vacated his post.
"Wouldn't dream of anything else." Jack says to himself before exiting the room as well.

How do you sleep well?
You always seemed to wake up with a smile on your face. You always had. People always commented on it.
"How are you so happy?"
"It's too early for this."
Those were common but you let it slide off your back.
You loved your job, your team, you just enjoyed life.
I think I'll take my whiskey neat
Jay was admittedly an asshole. He didn't used to be but life happens. Shit hitting the fan constantly takes a toll on you.
War takes a toll on you.
People leaving takes a toll on you.
So he stopped hanging out with the unit after work, heading home and watching hockey reruns.
He'd get letters from Mouse every so often but with Erin gone in New York, he was lonely. Very lonely.
I work late, where I'm free from the phone
An arson investigation is where he met you. A pure fucking ray of sunshine. It made him roll his eyes. No one was ever that happy.
No one.
"Sunshine, someone from Intelligence is here to interview you." Matt Casey tells you as you lean against Ambulance 61, you share a glance with Sylvie before following Matt.
"Jay, this is Sunshine. She's one of our paramedics." Matt says and you extend your hand towards Jay for a handshake which he does.
"Follow me, I'll take your statement." Jay gruffs and starts walking so you follow him to give your statement about what you saw.
You know you're bright as the morning, as soft as the rain
Intelligence was struggling even with OFI's help. Arson was already hard enough to prove, even harder when nearly all the evidence was gone.
People kept dying and no one could stop this from happening.
Jay kept seeing you at scenes, smiling despite the carnage around you. Did you just not feel pain or something?
It took Jay getting hit in the head to actually talk to you.
A suspect had hit him with a 2x4 from behind and Voight made him get checked over by the paramedics.
"Seriously, I'm fine." Jay swears, refusing to even be examined by you or Sylvie.
"Jay, you could have a concussion." Sylvie tries but he wasn't listening.
"SIT DOWN!" You shout, the sound making everyone around you stop.
You yelling was a one in a million event.
Jay slowly sits down on the bumper of the 61.
"That wasn't so hard, was it?" You ask before snapping on a pair of gloves and poking his scalp.
You're too sweet for me
Jay was man enough to admit that he liked bossy women. Women who could match his temper and mouthiness.
He expected it even.
He didn't expect to fall for you. You had yelled at him once and he behaved like a damn dog.
You were too sweet for him.
You were sweet in the way that hurt his heart.
He could never be as sweet as you. He snapped at people for little things, he had so much blood on his hands.
So he didn't talk to you anymore. Not when you waved him over at Molly's. Definitely not taking your statement at scenes.
Distancing himself from you before you could even get hurt.

Something 'bout you hit me like a freight train to the chest
Buck had dealt with his fair share of cops, from high school parties getting busted to helping the LAPD with calls.
He knew Athena the best out of every cop he'd ever met but you changed that.
You had been a transplant from out of state who had been lucky enough to join the LAPD.
Buck met you when you were keeping the public back from the scene of twisted metal and exposed beams at a hotel at a near 45 degree angle after the 7.1 earthquake. He thought you were gorgeous even in your uniform.
"Buckaroo, focus!" Chimney snapped him from his daydream.
"I'm coming!" Buck groans before turning away from you.
Maybe it's fate, maybe it's late
Fate or whatever you want to call it brought him back to you.
More like Athena brought him, by the scruff of his neck.
Literally.
"What is happening?" You ask while looking at the sight of a grown man being handled like a misbehaving puppy by your sergeant.
"I need you to keep an eye on him." Athena says before letting him go and leaving.
"I'm Buck." Buck says, holding his hand out for a handshake which you do and tell him your name.
"I like that, it suits you." Buck says before looking around the station.
"What did you do to upset Sergeant Grant?" You ask and Buck sighs while rubbing the back of his neck.
"No comment. I can plead the fifth, right?" Buck jokes and that makes you laugh. Hard.
I'll be damned if you love me, damned if you don't
The two of you swapped numbers and became close friends.
You texted about anything and everything. It was nice to have someone to talk to, who understood the rough sides of being a first responder.
My loneliness left the room the second that you walked in
"Would you like to go out with me.. this Friday?" Buck asked you which made you double take. A lull in your shift had allowed you to get coffee with Buck from a cart near the 118.
"Sure.. that'd be nice." You say with a smile before your radio squawks.
"Duty calls." You sigh before accepting the communication and heading to your cruiser.
Wait for me, I'm coming
Wait, I'm coming with you
You knew better than this. Going into a fire without training or proper equipment? Dating a firefighter had reinforced that idea. One of the stupidest decisions you've ever made.
Of course you didn't think about that, you heard a cry for help. So you went.
The heat was blistering and the smoke was thicker than thick.
"LAPD! IS ANYONE THERE?" You shout while staying close to the floor and coughing.
"HELP!" A little voice proclaims from a room nearby so you move towards the room and find two little kids curled into a corner. A little boy holding a little baby girl.
"Okay, let's get out of here." You urge them, opening a window so the boy can climb out.
The little boy reaches for his sister once his feet are on the ground. You pass the baby to him before he takes off.
You check around the room for anyone else and find nothing but just as you move towards the window, a sudden gust of wind knocks you against a wall and you fall unconscious.
"There's a police officer in there!" A little boy wails to a firefighter which makes Buck look up. This was your area to patrol.
"Buck, Eddie, go check for anyone inside." Bobby orders and Buck didn't need to be told twice before heading inside.
He finds you slumped against a wall with a gash on your face.
"Shit!" Buck curses before picking you up and climbing out the window to get you medical attention.
I could be lonely with you
Buck could talk for hours on end and then not speak for hours. It seemed impossible to others but it wasn't to you. The quiet wasn't smothering or uncomfortable, it just existed.
You enjoyed the quiet with Buck. It made everything seem like small potatoes.

Everyone has good and bad days, it's part of life. But sometimes all you seem to have are bad days. Days blur together and feel like a time loop you can't escape. Weekends where you lay in bed and the only time you get up is to use the bathroom. Sleeping or scrolling mindlessly.
Jack was no stranger to depression. Days where phantom pains made him relive that final deployment. His dark bedroom became his prison until everything stopped hurting long enough to get up.
He had suffered through those days and nights by himself for so very long. Without his wife. In that lonely two-story Craftsman style home in the suburbs.
You felt it arriving like the way snow arrives gently before slamming down and piling up. You went home after putting in for time off. Your boss was so kind and willing to sign off on it. A part of you said it was because they were more productive without you. You didn't try to change the thought process. All that mattered was getting into bed before you broke down.
You took your clothes off in your bedroom, the shades drawn and only a lamp on. You put the clothes in the hamper and pull on pajamas before cutting the light off and crawling under the covers.
You cried yourself to sleep. Tear tracks were sticky on your face as you woke. Your head pounded from dehydration. Your throat was raw and rough. You just went to the bathroom and grabbed a few painkillers for the headache before using a random cup from the counter to take the medication. You then went back to bed. Your phone buzzed and made noise but you didn't check the notifications.
Jack left text after text and voicemail after voicemail. He worried about you, all the time which became exacerbated by the fact you weren't talking to him. Not even a read receipt. So he decides to head to your home and uses his key that you had gifted him a few months back.
"Honey? You there?" Jack calls out, you don't respond so he makes his way to the bedroom. He finds you in the bed, wrapped up in tangled blankets and sheets with the lights off.
It clicks instantly. Jack turns around and grabs a glass, fills it up with ice water and brings it into your bedroom.
"Can you drink a little bit for me?" Jack asks, his hand brushing against your cheek. You slowly sit up, Jack grabs a pillow for you to lean against.
You slowly sip the water to appease Jack who had scooted you over so he could lay beside you, his phone in hand.
"What do you want to eat?" Jack asks, the DoorDash app open with the brightness all the way up. Jack puts the phone in your hands so you could put your order together.
When the order was placed and on the way, Jack looks at you with his analytical gaze before kissing your cheek.
"I'm here. You don't have to explain anything to me but I'm here. Just let me take care of you." He says before tugging you into his side.
"Dude, I haven't showered in a bit." You argue with him but Jack scoffs.
"I do not care. All I care about is making sure you're okay." Jack says before pulling up some TV show for background noise.

I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR MEDIA CONSUMPTION
"Time of death. 21:26." You said as you rip your blue nitrile gloves off. Your eyes filling with tears that you blink back. Someone had just lost their child. Your hand subconsciously went to your baby bump.
"I'll go inform the parents on this one." Will rubs your arm and guides you to the locker room.
"Thank you." You say to Will who nods before leaving. You pull out your phone from a pocket in your scrubs and look at the home screen. There was a selfie of Jay kissing your cheek on a bridge at the Chicago Riverwalk. The water glimmering in the sunlight of the photo. You unlock your phone and dial Jay's number.
"Halstead." Jay's voice interrupts the ringing on the first ring. You smile a little at the sound, you just wanted to crawl into bed with Jay and sleep for days.
"You should really start checking the caller ID. Can you pick me up? I don't feel like taking the L." You say into the line, on the other end you hear the jangling of keys.
"Yeah, do you need me to stay on the phone?" Jay asks as he gets into his truck, putting on the passenger seat warmer for you since you got cold easily plus it was winter in Chicago.
"I'll be fine. I've got Will, I love you." You remind Jay who nods even though you can't see it.
"I love you too. I'll be there soon." Jay says before hanging up so you can get your coat on. You grab your hat and mittens, tugging them onto your head and fingers. Where some of the most heat is released from your body, extremely susceptible to hypothermia.
You grab your backpack and clock out, your phone in your coat pocket as you make your way to the exit of the ED.
Jay's truck pulls up as you make it onto the sidewalk. Jay hops out of the truck and walks over to you, wrapping you in his arms as best he could with the baby bump. Jay was so excited to be a father, determined to be a better father than his own.
"How's the nugget?" Jay smiles at you and you huff as Jay guides you to his truck, opening the door for you.
"The nugget is fine. I just had a shitty shift." You offer up the only tidbit of information you could give without crying. Jay noticed. He always did, good, bad, or otherwise.
"What do you want for dinner? I know you probably didn't eat much today." Jay asks as he rubs his right hand over your thigh.
"Grilled cheese?" You mumble as you play with his hands, your fingers tracing his veins.
"You have good hands for a needle stick. Nice juicy veins." You say it without meaning to. The words slipping out of your mouth.
"Well that's good to hear." Jay smirks before he pulls into the driveway of your shared home. It was in a nice suburban area near the 21st District and Chicago Med. It was the perfect home for the two of you and soon the three of you.
"Come on, let's get inside. It's freezing and you definitely don't want to go back to the hospital." Jay shivers at the cold despite living here all his life.
"Yeah, that'd be good." You agree as you get out of the truck. Jay offers his hand out to you which you take.
"I'll make that grilled cheese for you, you just rest. You deserve it." Jay says as he unlocks the door and lets you go in first. You immediately take your coat and other winter items off before bending down to untie your work shoes.
"I don't know what I'm going to do when my feet are the size of sausages and I can't see the floor." You mumble as you sit down on the couch, the fabric inviting you to sleep.
"I'll be there to help you because you're my girl." Jay reassures you, his knuckles brushing your cheek gently.
"You're on TV detail tonight." Jay calls over his shoulder which you smile at before grabbing the remote and turning on some medical drama. You loved to point out to Jay about what they were doing wrong. Jay loved it because his girl was so smart, funny, and a million other adjectives.
"Medical drama with the usual running commentary I see." Jay says as he waits for the bread to toast.
"Yeah, it's like we watch cop shows and you tell me everything they do wrong. It's just fun that way." You call out as the channel returns from ad breaks. There was a mass casualty incident and the triage was horrendous.
"SHE'S A BLACK TAG YOU MORONS!" You holler at the TV when you hear the actors say that she didn't have a pulse and had been down for longer than eight minutes.
"Babe, I love your enthusiasm but we have neighbors unfortunately." Jay comments as he places the blue plate in your lap, a glass of ice water on the coffee table.
"Yeah, yeah, I know." You reply as Jay takes the remote away from you and turns on some movie for background noise.
"Wanna talk about your shift?" Jay asks as you look at him, tears pooling in your eyes once more.
"I lost a kid today. He was trying to get his little sister's soccer ball and this drunk driver hit him. I couldn't save him!" You finally break down, ugly crying as Jay holds you tight.
"And you thought about our baby." Jay tacks on and you nod while sniffling.
"Yeah, I thought that I might not be able to save our kid. I'm a doctor, I bring people back to life but I couldn't save this kid. The driver just had a head lac but he killed this kid because he was drinking and driving."
"I know but you did what you could. If there is some afterlife the kid isn't hurting anymore." Jay wipes tears from your cheeks.
"I guess you're right." You mumble before Jay kisses your forehead and puts his hand on the bump.
"Boy or girl?" Jay asks you and you chuckle wetly. In true Jay fashion he made a joke to ease the pain.
"Well what do you want it to be." You ask as you feel the flock of butterflies in your stomach, the baby moving around a bit.
"A little bit of me and a whole lot of you. Healthy and just like you." Jay admits which makes you tear up again.
"Are those happy tears?" Jay asks and you nod.
"Hormones, that's all." You mutter and Jay let's out a sigh of relief.
"Okay, good. You need to eat and I'll go run a bath for you." Jay says before getting up and walking to the main bedroom of the house as you begin to eat your grilled cheese.

Your day was not going well in the slightest. First you woke up on the floor with your husband already off to work. Connor must have left before you rolled off the bed.
Then you had run out of food in the pantry and refrigerator so you had to brave the remaining bits of snow that was predominantly ice now to get some food. That's what landed you in the hospital.
You fell on your ass and hit your head outside of a little diner. Connor would have a fit if you didn't get it checked out so you went to Chicago Med since it was closest.
But it wasn't, South Presbyterian was closer but damnit you just wanted to see your husband. Even if it meant getting fussed over.
Now you were sat on an emergency room bed until someone could check you over. You were laying on your side to avoid aggravating your tailbone. You were pretty sure you had just bruised it but you were here to make sure you didn't have a concussion.
"Did you see the woman in room three? Think she's related to Rhodes?" Monique asks Maggie who shrugs before looking down at your chart on an iPad.
"Maybe but Connor only has one sister and that's not her. Could be similar last names." Maggie comments as April sighs going to assess you.
"Hi, I'm April and I'll be your nurse today." April greets you with a warm smile as she pulls on a pair of blue nitrile gloves.
"Nice to meet you. I'm pretty sure I'm fine but my husband would cause a fuss if I didn't get checked out. Connor's a bit of a drama queen when it comes to my health but I love him nonetheless." You smile at her before cringing internally.
"You probably don't care, I'm sorry." You apologize but April waves it off. April steps closer to you.
"You fell and hit your head, correct?" April questions and you nod.
"Alright, I'm just gonna look at your head to make sure you don't have any bleeding then I'm going to take some blood. Any chance you could be pregnant?" April asks and you shake your head.
"Nope, I take oral contraceptives and we use protection." You answer and April nods before checking your scalp for any bleeding.
"I don't see anything so I'll just take some of your blood, have you pee in a cup as precaution. Once we get those back, we'll get an X-ray of your scalp and pelvis to check for any abnormalities." April explains as she grabs a tube for blood collection and the other necessities.
"Of course." You say as April puts a tourniquet on your arm to take your blood. You take a deep breath and let her do her job. She finishes up and hands you the cup.
"Write your name, the date, and your date of birth on the label. There's pens in the bathroom and put it in the metal box in the wall." April smiles before leaving the room.
You follow the instructions given before washing your hands and getting back into bed.
Connor gets a page from April asking him to come down to ED. Connor was confused but goes down there anyway only to find you in a hospital bed.
"What the fuck." Connor questions as he gets closer to you and you look up at him.
"Busted my ass, I'm fine though. No concussion or anything out of place." You promise him before kissing him.
"I'll take you home when you get discharged and then I'm running you a bath." Connor wraps his arms around you and you nod as best you can into his chest.
"Yes, Dr. Rhodes." You tease and Connor laughs before April comes in with your discharge paperwork.
"Thank you, April." You and Connor say in sync before you laugh.

Safe under the cut
Every breath you took was painful as you limped to the bunkhouse. Blood was crusted under your nose and your knuckles were split open.
With a grunt, you enter the bunkhouse door and tried to walk past the wranglers and to the bathroom.
Of course they noticed and their poker game came to an abrupt stop as they survey you.
"What the hell happened to you?" Colby asks, turning his cards face down on the table.
"It's nothing." You say and head to the bathroom, wanting to clean yourself up.
A pair of footsteps follow you into the bathroom.
"Did you lose a fight with a bull?" Ryan asks you before grabbing the first aid kit and shutting the bathroom door.
"Something like that." You grit out as you ease yourself down onto the closed toilet lid.
Ryan grabs a washcloth and soaks in warm water before kneeling in front of you and gently dabbing the blood off your face.
"Sorry." Ryan apologizes when you hiss in pain before pulling the rag back.
"What happened? No bullshit." Ryan asks as he starts bandaging your knuckles.
"Fight broke out, got caught in the cross hairs, and learned not to do that again." You admit and Ryan looks at you with soft eyes.
"You need to tell Rip." Ryan advises you and you make a noise in agreement.
"I know." You admit and Ryan presses a kiss to your knuckle.
"For the pain." Ryan winks before tossing the trash away and helping you up.
"You should probably shower." Ryan says before heading out of the bathroom like he hadn't just kissed your knuckles.
You scoff before grabbing a change of clothes from your footlocker and going to shower.
