Beautiful Animal Ili Pika Photos
14th June 2020:
I found this cute little guy on YouTube and after more research, I found that there are only 1,000 of Ili pika left (probably less by now). They are one of the world’s most endangered species according to telegraph.co.uk
Please keep in mind that just like us, all animals do need love and support too 💚
From National Geographic comes this clip about the #IliPika #ilipikas - more from Wikipedia: Ili pika The Ili pika (Ochotona iliensis) is a species of mammal in the family Ochotonidae, endemic to northwest China. After its discovery in 1983, it was not documented again until 2014. Its population is declining due to largely unknown causes, and it is currently considered to be endangered, with approximately less than 1,000 left. Description The Ili pika somewhat resembles a short-eared rabbit. It is large for a pika, with a length of 20.3–20.4 cm and a weight of up to 250 g. It has brightly colored hair and displays large rusty-red spots on forehead, crown, and the sides of the neck. Range It is endemic to the Tian Shan mountains of northwest Chinese province Xinjiang. A recent census indicated that the Ili pika may have been extirpated from the Jilimalale and Hutubi South Mountains. Habitat The Ili pika inhabits talus areas on high cliff faces. This species constructs haypiles and is a generalized herbivore. Ecology Almost nothing is known about the ecology or behavior of the species. The Ili pika has low population densities. It is mostly a diurnal species, but may exhibit nocturnal activity. Only one to two litters are produced each year, but litter size for this species is unknown. Conservation The species was first observed by conservationist Li Weidong in 1983. After three years of research, Li and his team named it the Ili Pika, after the area where it is found, the Ili Prefecture on the far west side of China's Xinjiang province. The animal was not documented again until May 2014 (again by Li). Its population has been reduced by 70% within 15 years. Population declines have been observed for several locations inhabited by this species. A recent census indicated that the Ili pika may have been extirpated from the Jilimalale and Hutubi South Mountains. Populations have declined in the regions of Jipuk, Tianger Apex, and Telimani Daban. Only one examined site, the Bayingou region of Xinjiang Uygur, showed signs of previously observed abundance. An estimated 2,000 mature individuals existed in the early 1990s... (Reasons for declines are unknown)...
Two cute ili pikas from isolated mountains in China. More after credits... This is a #repost from @wild.for.nature via @PhotoAroundApp Weird Animal Wednesday!! This cute little bundle of fur is called an Ili Pika! Not much is known about this species, and they weren’t discovered until 1983 and not seen again until 2014! They live in northwestern China in the Tianshan Mountains surviving at high elevations between 9,000 and 13,000 feet. The Ili Pika is a small mammal, only about 8 inches in length and has fur ranging in coloration from brown, grey, white, and black. They are herbivorous and construct their homes from piles of grass and hay. Studies have shown that there may be up to 2000 individuals, but only 29 have been seen. They are currently listed as an endangered species although no protection plans are in place. Happy Easter & April Fools! That's not a bunny, that's an ili pika! Swipe to see my endangered animal Easter eggs. 🐰🐨🦒🐸🦏 Instead of bunnies and chickens, let's give some love to all of the endangered species out there! . In the last few weeks, the last male northern white rhino on earth passed away, and giraffes are now classified as vulnerable to extinction. I had the amazing experience of seeing black rhinos and giraffes roam wild in the Serengeti, and it is sad to realize that others may never have that opportunity if the animals go extinct. There are so many other species on the brink of extinction, all around the world, and the first step to conservation efforts is awareness. Hope you learned about a new animal or two! . Fun facts about Ili Pikas: They are endemic to China's Xinjiang province, first discovered in 1983 and then never seen again until 2014. They are critically endangered, and it estimated that there are less than 1000 of these cuties left in the wild! AND there are no known conservation efforts to help their dwindling populations. 😢 Maybe the zoos can help. . . #happyeaster #aprilfools #ilipika #kiwi #snowleopard #giraffe #frigatebird #redpanda #blackrhino #pangolin #poisondartfrog #sciart #conservation #endangered #endangeredspecies
