Happy International Women’s Day! 💙 Today is a day I got to portray a badass, feminist character who does exactly what she wants and won’t let a man tell her how she should play her role in life. Here’s a sneak peek of my gorgeous Act I costume for Julia Jellicoe, presented with a fun slice of women’s history trivia. This role was originated in 1896 by a Hungarian actress named Ilka Pálmay, who was the first woman ever to portray a man in a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta - in 1893, she portrayed the tenor lead in The Mikado (Arthur Sullivan tried in vain to stop the performance)! On this day and on all days, uphold the empowerment and liberation of women across the globe, across all nations, ethnicities, religions, and socioeconomic status. And come see me and @ljmusicgirl kick ass in this role for the next two weekends. #internationalwomensday #feminist #ilkapalmay #juliajellicoe #thegrandduke #gilbertandsullivan #operetta #opera #theatre #venturacountygilbertandsullivanrepertorycompany #vcgsrc #hillcrestcenterforthearts (at Hillcrest Center for the Arts) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9f9OYkhcVK/?igshid=k2hxvhtnw63x
