HODAG KILLED NEAR HERE WITH REVOLVER

“Doc” Pardee is telling a great wild animal story, and when he gets into the middle of it one would think there was no such thing as bucking horses or any other kind of beast. He declares that a new species of animal has been discovered in the vicinity of Prescott which is known as the “hodag”  in its native country. He says that one of these animals has been killed in the Black Canyon district. Two hunters were after the beast, and many shots were fired to no avail, when Al Kellogg took the trail and soon landed the animal with a six-shooter. Only Pardee can describe the animal. SHE INTERFERED WITH SPORT

A woman member of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was visiting a Wyoming ranch, a subscriber writes, and found it necessary to reform many things there. She fed the cats meat privately, which gave them a taste for birds and young chickens. She had the collie come into her cabin to sleep, which made him fat and lazy and inclined to neglect the sheep. She wanted the saddle horses put in the barn when it snowed, and they fought to get out, liking the snow and the air better.     “So some of the young folks tried to get back at her by telling her about the ‘side-hill goanthus,’ which has legs on one side longer than the other adapting him to his life on steep hills. They told her we had great sport in the fall driving them down onto level ground, where they could run only In a small circle, owing to the arrangement of their legs, and then all you had to do was to stand in the center of the circle and hit them with a club. She flew to pieces with scorn. ‘Oh, how manly, how sportsmanlike! What must you think of yourselves! Merely to stand still and kill the poor things with a great big club!’ We resigned.”—Outlook.

PHANTOM BEAST BRINGS TERROR

Mysterious Animal Scares Countryside

ENGLISH, Ind., April 15.—Much excitement prevails among persons living just east of English following the discovery of an illusive animal that has fairly terrorized the community.

No coherent description of the animal has been gotten because all who have seen it have flied in terror from its sight. But it is generally conceded it is about three feet high, has a dull white fur and howls like a frightened fox.

The theory has been advanced that the animal from a circus and is wandering about the neighborhood desperate from hunger. Melvin Carmichael, a young farmer, reports that a cow and a young pig belonging to him have fallen victims to the animal. Repeated attempts by parties to capture it have been without avail.
