Sabbatical Essay #Day 10: Third Day on the Trail
The third day on the Salkantay trail started into jungle with bright blue sky. Looking back, we were lucky to have such nice weathers all the way through. I’ve read about how important it was to bring water proof “everything” and even after the warning I’ve see on youtube I still did not bring water proof pants. I was lucky in Peru that I never needed them but I ended up buying them later on in Alaska.
Hilton showed us some berries on the way that were supposed to be good at blocking sun, so our group had berry smears on our faces. It was “sort of” fun but I don’t think it really helped with the sun.
Unlike the first one and a half day of the trail, the third day was all sunny - hot jungle trail. Everything was green and there were bugs and animals along the way.
We had a little resting spot somewhere in the jungle. It was a nice open space with grass and little snack shop. Trackers would sit and rest. I was constantly ready to pass out during that time and I was actually amazed how some of the men or boys took this rest opportunity to play soccer!!!
Here was also my first time ever to taste fresh passion fruit. I’ve always known them to appear on hotel buffets and they were always all icy and not that tasty but this piece of fruit blew my mind. It was so citrus, sweet, and fresh!!!! This was point of my life where I felt in love with this specific fruit.
At the end of our trail, we had hot springs waiting for us. It was such a comfort to be showering and to be able to jump into Peruvian hot springs after such a hard trip. I felt and still feel super blessed that I had chance to enjoy myself in such a exotic place with my dearest friend Laura and trail companions we met there.
Then we came back to our camp for dinner. There was “supposed to be a PARTY” at 9 PM according to Hilton which never happened. I do not even know why he even told us that. Lauren and Nathan went to their tent early because they were tired so Laura and I waited for this “party” around campfire but nothing happened.
We did meet another tour guide by the fire who gave us some good tour infos and we ventured outside our camp (on third night the camp was inside a village) because there was loud music playing. It was coming from a house right in front of our camp and when we peaked inside, there was a huge hall with a lot of tables but empty minus two ladies sitting there... and the music playing. Weird.
So the third night ended with no party.

One important thing I learned in Peru, and have carried with me ever since, was how objectively Peruvians viewed history. Maybe because it’s an ancient land, whose ancient people somehow managed to retain their visibility, perhaps because vast areas were only hospitable to them? I don’t know that that’s the answer though, because the conquistadors were AMAZINGLY brutal. On the other hand, the Spaniards, unlike the British, were not historical revisionists. History is history. We were on a tour of the Cathedral of Lima, founded in 1535—and our Indigenous guide stopped here, at this first photo. She said it was a painting of all the monarchs of Peru. I remember her pointing out that the early monarchs were Indigenous, and then abruptly they are European. “That’s when we were conquered” she said matter of factly. Someone of us asked her how she felt, knowing this history and seeing the visual representation of the change. And I know she was a tour guide, but she stopped for a minute and said “well, it’s life. Someone is always being conquered. And if it hadn’t happened that way none of us would be standing here.” Later that day at the National AfroPeruvian Museum, I marveled at the detailed charts of racial mixing and the carefully preserved history. I think I learned more about slave routes from Africa in that one afternoon, than I did in my years in America. #ilovePeru #peruismorethanCusco #festejoperuano #festejos #afroperuano #blackfolkeverywhere #whereverweare #weareus #afroindigenous #indigenousAmerica #history #youshouldtravelmore #tenyearsofphotos #endofthedecade #lookingback #instaphoto #olympusphotography #retro #2010 #2009to2019 (at Lima, Peru) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6tqOa6BJqA/?igshid=ldz127dk28ko
