I've never understood why villains taunt the "good guys" and threaten their loved ones

All it does is make them more determined to kill them. I think it's meant to kill their spirit, but really, it does the exact opposite. I mean, if you were about to be killed, and someone said "Hey, by the way, I'm gonna kill your mom/husband/girlfriend/brother/best friend/grandma after I kill you," would you just let yourself be killed, or would you fight for not only your OWN fucking life, but theirs, too?
