Comforting Jealousy HCs + Scenario — Kanzaki Kaoru

Zaki doesnt react right away when you start sulking. He notices the pout, the averted gaze, the exaggerated “Im fine” you toss at him when he asks if somethings wrong. He wont press. Not immediately. But internally? He hasnt taken his eyes off you since.

He’s not great at comforting with words, often times, hes awkwardly hovering around. You might find him lingering just a little too close, pretending to scroll through the same webcomic on his phone or stare at the ceiling. If you look up suddenly, hell look away and mutter something you cant even hear.

When you admit youre jealous, he gets weirdly quiet. Not because he doesnt care, but because he does care. Maybe a little too much than hed like to admit to you. Yet, he has no idea how to show it without looking stupid or saying something overly vulnerable. He doesnt like when youre upset because of him, it makes his chest tight as his brain tries to rack around solutions to your problems.

If you sulk too long, hell eventually cave and open up just a little. But after all the awkward tension fades, hell sit beside you quietly. Close together as your shoulders lightly brush over. He only wants you. No ghost, no stranger, no threat could change that.

You didnt mean to sulk over something like this. Really, you didnt! But when that stranger, who just happened to be objectively charming even to your eyes, got a little too familiar with Zaki, laughing, leaning in, brushing their hand against his arm… yeah. It hit a nerve. Yet, Zaki didnt react to the stranger. In fact, he had barely said a word. When he did it seemed as his tone remained flat, as it always was.

But you still felt it, that tightening ache in your chest. You thought you were being subtle. Just a quick glance at them once, tightening of your fist softly next. It was almost the end of the school day, you wouldnt have to bare it much longer.

But you couldn’t. You hadnt said anything. Just pulled away afterward, muttering an on the spot excuse before wandering off to the far corner of the room. You assumed he wouldnt follow. Or at least, if he noticed, that hed let it go sooner than youd hope.

And you were right. At least, for a while. You let your school day go on, packing up as you hard the last and final bell slowly chime.

Walking side by side down the quiet street, the weight of the afternoon settling between you. The two of you didnt talk much on the walk home. Zaki is beside you, hands tucked into the warm pockets of his jacket. However, instead of his usual distant silence, hes got this small, almost nervous energy to him. As if theres something weighing his chest, yet isnt sure how to get it out. He glances at you, then quickly looks away, cheeks slightly flushed.

“Hey. So.. earlier, when you left, I was kinda… surprised,” he says quietly, rubbing the back of his neck, “Didnt think youd actually walk off. I was talking to that person because they had questions. Stuff I thought was... interesting.” You bite your lip, trying to keep calm but the jealousy pokes through.

“Interesting, huh?” You keep walking, shoulders still a little hunched. He looks away, the stranger probably another otaku, you realize. Not that you care, but Zaki couldve talked about the same stuff with you, could he not?

“Yeah. But I didnt mean to ignore you.”

You look down, fiddling with your sleeve. You dont say anything for a moment, but the way you press your lips together makes him think youre upset at him.

“I get if you felt left out or if youre just mad at me,” he admits, voice almost a whisper. “Im probably really bad at this stuff still.”

You glance at him briefly, eyes soft but distant.

“Im not mad,” your voice is small when you finally speak. Yet, to him, itll always sound like the voice of an angel. After a moment, he looks over at you with that calm, serious expression and finally says something else, “were you jealous earlier?”

You blink, surprised he noticed. You shrug shyly, then scoot closer and gently lean your shoulder against his arm. Without words, he can already understand what the subtle actions mean. He pauses, eyes flickering with surprise, but he doesnt pull away. Instead, his tone softens and he sighs lightly.

“Im sorry. I didnt mean to make you feel that way.”

You look up at him, still a little hesitant, then reach out and take his hand.

“I just hoped youd finally notice,” you say softly. He gives a small, rare smile.

“I do. More than you think.”

You squeeze his hand gently, yet he catches the small movement and stops walking for a moment. His eyes flicker with something softer, almost surprised. He doesn’t pull away. Instead, his fingers curl around yours, warm and steady. And as you both walk, the late afternoon sun casting long shadows on the sidewalk. That once quiet air between you two feels less heavy.

Sorry 8-36 is late y'all life is beating my ass rn, lets hop to it! as always, spoilers below!

i love learning more abt queer intentions and i wish we got to see charlie interacting with the band more as it seems like he's now a fulltime member??/ much to think on....

i lvoe old people parallels so fucking bad. i also love nick's awkward hands in his pockets again, but also like how important it is to see older gay people when you're young it's just. really important to me, actually.

okay! wow so tao and elle are on again off again which like makes so much sense. i do also think it's interesting that sahar is the one pointing out that teen relationships don't usually last bc like... genuinely speaking, nick and charlie have already gone through so much adult shit together that if they didn't break up once already, they probably won't for a WHILE and even then, we know they're endgame. vs. tao and elle who haven't been through the same level of problems on either side beyond like clinginess and the prospect of long distance. it does make me wonder abt how much the paris squad knows abt charlie's mental health beyond the eating disorder?

im rlly hoping the dark background behind charlie isnt' a cue that charlie's abt to have his own "oh god we won't last" arc in this book. im really exhausted ms. oseman please i think it'd be so funny if charlie is aggressively optimistic abt he and nick lasting. i know that motherfucker has a pinterest board dedicated to their future wedding. i selfishly just want more nick time. i feel like this is the best ive gotten to know him throughout the whole webcomic, argh!

now i did read tao's "joke" here as him mostly projecting the fact that he and elle probably won't be speaking ever again after pride. however, i do think this was very much wrong place wrong time-- which happens! but in the wake of EVERYTHING that's been happening i'm just like damn... i do not think the paris squad actually communicates well or that often which is so interesting bc like... i'd argue high school friend groups also don't last but maybe that's different for british schools? someone lmk. ALSO Y'ALL KNOW I GOTTA LOVE THIS ONE.

i really love nick comforting tao in the back but also like. elle's entire thing with how she and tao are too intense to last and i do think! relationships of passion are a thing and it's interesting to see the juxtaposition of tao and elle's relationship vs nick and charlie's bc like... we don't see the passion on page in the comic but we do have a glimpse of it in the show and like... again. n+c have just taken things slower bc they had to for a while and they've gone through tough shit so much earlier than tao and elle have had to in comparison. but i do kind of like the almost... self consciousness it seems to stir in charlie? bc like yeah if my bff and my other bff keep breaking up i'd consider my relationship too but he and nick are shockingly steady all things considered. i almost wish nick crashed out harder to justify possible anxieties.

idk if alice does this on purpose but it seems like charlie's scars are highlighted when he's being vulnerable or when nick is and i really really like that little nod a lot but also the normalization of it. as someone with sh scars it's just nice to see, you know?

kiind of a continuation of the STIRY CRISIS i had the other day but a whole new issue

[no real spoilers here other than my planning how stuff is gonna be distributed/revealed]

so i DO think the best idea would be to let the lore trickle into the story slowly and inconspicuously. but.

there’s sososo many little moments that happen on the other side of things and that i wouldn’t be able to show later on (idk if all of them are relevant enough for flashbacks :// are flashbacks like?? fun to have a ton in a row?? is that ok if we like go back in time for a bit??)

anyways. i made three outlines for the three most lore relevant characters (there’s technically ~five mcs but the other two r rly js there for moral support)

and i was thinking about having multiple povs. like i’ll sometimes switch povs or do the same scene/day from another mcs perspective

but also that takes away the big element of surprise during the first Major Conflict which i kinda do wanna find a way to make into a Big Revelation (it’s already a big revelation for mc but i think i want ppl to also be shocked and appalled)

i feeell like the best thing would be to sneak in little hints as things go south and then have Big Reveal be super shocking

however

i am very impatient and there is a deep urge to start off the story with my favoritest part (the big reveal ofc)

without revealing too much—there’s the realm of my mc who’s js jolly and oblivious. and then there’s the Big Bad and characters associated with Big Bad. so i think im gonna reveal that there’s a big bad so i can share thAt lore from the start. and then out of all the other characters u would obviously think hey that Big Bad probably has people in it.. but WHICH people??? and it’d become increasingly obvious until there’s an “aha” or “oh no” moment and THATS WHEN I DROP THE BIGGG REVEEALLL and a flashback of all the stuff that’s happened as mc was doing their own thing.

new plan: reveal one of the Bads from the start but make the other one kinda separate from what’s going on so that when they cause the Major Event ppl think it’s the one they know abt but ACTUALLY it’s the secret bad who we KNEW about and SUSPECTED but was separate and unconfirmed so it’s like AHA and OH NOO at the same time

prefacing this by saying its really funny to me that this has just become my main blog despite it being a sonic-centric sideblog. the tism

anyway i wanted to just gush a little abt life. loosely related to sonic but mostly just abt where my career and interests are going

ive like. always been passionate abt comics, at least making them. when i was way way way younger i wanted to have my own strip in the funnies in the newspaper. in high school i wanted to be a manga artist. i made my first completed webcomic in 2015 and finished in 2018. then i proceeded to make another webcomic with 222 pages so far (idk when thatll get finished fr but..still lol), and then another one with two chapters so far (again idk when itll be finished if ever), and now i have new game with two sequels planned.. and also now i wanna be an official idw sonic comic artist.

i dont have much in terms of coherent thoughts abt this rn but im just. bursting with happiness at the thought of working on official sonic comics. idk if i'll make it, but i dearly hope i will. literally my passion for sonic in addition to comics in general is making me feel like im going to pop (so like..cry a lot) and its all i can really think about anymore

i wanna keep making new game so bad, even the sequels. i wanna make other sonic comics. i wanna work on official sonic comics. i just. wanna make comics 😭😭😭 especially w sonic

if i had my druthers all of my aus would be made into comics but i think if im gonna go for idw i can only rly focus on new game for now unless i find that i have more time and energy to do more 9_9a i guess i dont have to make them into Full comics, i can do mini comics for parts i really wanna show as comic sequences, but still

For comics, what is your work process like? How do you get from idea to a finished comic?

HELLOOOO OAAA omg this is a tough nut to crack as im a pretty chaotic writer in that way...... i think it depends whether i'm creating longform or shortform, i actually recently talked abt this elsewhere so i can bring an example based on the sylvanian discourse comic as shortform! long post with sketch pages and thumbnails etc ahead, ill put it under a cut! 🧡🧡

usually i start by jotting down really loose ideas which i do in my native language; ill translate it for you but i sent myself a mad scientist-esque message that went like: "kohaku giggling at his phone, rinne asking what's so funny and kohaku tells them that love assigned them sylvanian families creatures, and shows them. niki's is obvious, everyone agrees. same with kohaku's, plus rinne does pleading face emoji at how cute it is. rinne's critter could get criticism on being uncool? google. himeru's reaction to his own is no way.. himeru is this one and shows a pic on his phone to which everyone is like ..:3 himeru we didn't know you'd thought about this already but himeru just demands everyone to agree with his choice more than aira's. aira later gets a text from kohaku that himeru didn't agree and aira is PISSED"

sdfsdfdklhs so this was my script, as you see the story changed a little while thumbnailing bc i figured out a funnier way to write it; + i cut the scene change for pacing reasons and constrained the ending into one panel with texts on a screen...! then i had to start finding the critters to assign them, i presented my assignments to friends to check if im accurate or out sailing:D:D mwah mwah thank you to my council of love

next step was writing dialogue which i did while sketching the pages super loosely as little thumbnails, i like to get my layouts solidified when thumbnailing too and i usually do my cleanups straight on the scaled up thumbnails. when i write longform i usually thumbnail out more than 6 pages at once to see how the pages flow and write loose mad scientist type scripts chapter by chapter. i rly do miss working on longform comics 😭😭😭 (my webcomic FLFR became abandoned bc i deleted my twitter years ago and realized later that my only way of accessing my webtoons account was thru twitter. customer support said its gone forever so 🇫.)

as you see in this example i rly like to have my text flow and kind of lead the reader's eye thru the action... i think all comic artists have different approaches to certain things but i like loose and dynamic paneling very much; it's so much fun to play around with!! i'm also so so pleased that people noticed in the comic how kohaku was becoming more and more excited and confident with every showing, it was a little difficult to figure out how to make a repetitive and essentially very boring action (someone holding up their phone) work in comic format without feeling copypasted or trite. more thumbnail examples from my sketchbook for the rinniki comic (i like that i wrote notes for myself on top of drawings, like "üldine" to refer to the panel being a wide shot:DD wonderful overlap of storyboarding and comic work!!):

overall i like writing comics since you can add endless details. what makes comics work for me is giving up on being a perfectionist or you will never finish a comic. one finished comic is better than the perfect comic in your head because you'll have the experience and free space in your head to write another comic, instead of the first one stewing in your mind. :D and so on!! be bold, don't be scared to draw ugly, and draw bad comics. and definitely write it with an audience in mind, except the audience is 50 versions of you and what you enjoy/like most!!

i started my first longform comic in high school and idk how but i managed to finish it, it's not a great comic, but i'm proud that it's done and it taught me a lot. same for FLFR which i hope i can rewrite/redraw some day since it's a story i still want to tell and the characters are rly near and dear to my heart, but i think i totally got burnt out from juggling work, comics and things going on in my life at the time :( surprisingly i also enjoyed working on a comic project where the client wrote the script and had character designs ready but mainly because the client's script writing style was similar to mine which at times was like "idk they fight and something funny happens here"

my ocs that ive been thinking about most lately have been those under the tag "fine & mellow" :o) theyre a 60s girl band! ive read a lot about the dynamics of popular bands, specifically in this time period, and i think the love-hate relationship that usually results is really interesting.

i think if i ever illustrated it in some way (art or writing or etc) id want it to be a comic. maybe a webcomic, maybe a physical comic. im not super sure on that.

id want to include things like interviews, magazine covers, album covers, photos of them, etc, played as from a real band (as real as a picture of furries can be). i have a list of album names and song ideas for each one (some being existing songs to pretend are theirs, some being "original" songs. meaning i made it up)

the band is founded in 1959 by dominique dalmatian, who is the main character. she's reserved- not shy necessarily but cautious of every new person she meets. she has bpd (projectionn of my symptomsss) and depression that creeps in slowly and immobilizes her. and she plays bass! she has a strong work ethic and will push her feelings (and others') aside to finish her work, in this case being f&m's albums.

fine & mellow is the name of the band, by the way, to be clear. it's named after a jazz standard and slowly becomes more and more ironic.

there are other guitarists before, of course, but the most important one is laura labradoodle. she's peppy and brings a lighter tone to their music as well as a more romantic light. shes a brilliant songwriter, despite it being really just a hobby. shes a full time photographer when they recruit her. when she joins in 1962, the band as a whole changes. she and dom write songs together, becoming closer and closer. that relationship and how it bends and breaks is especially what i would focus on. there's something so heartbreaking about getting so close, hearing a part of the others soul, only for something to backfire and send the band into a downward spiral.

clears my throat. so anyway, the drummer is named lolly lamb, and she stays from the beginning (until she's pushed out by jackie, who you'll hear about in a sec). she adores 40s and 50s fashion and has a seemingly instinctual sense of beat. drumming for f&m started out as a favor for her friend and ended up becoming so much more for her, and the rest of them.

in early 1964, after a couple months of no creative breaks, laura brings in... a hairdresser. her name is jackie jackrabbit, and she stares at the other two like they've grown new heads. but she's laura's friend, and they know the moment she sings with them that they've got something special. jackie is a little snobby and a little blunt, but manages to fit in fairly well. she can't play an instrument, but her singing ability more than makes up for it, and laura hands her a tambourine a few months later.

they release an album in july, and it seems to be the domino piece slowly falling into place. after months of arguing with jackie, lolly leaves the band.

they hire a session drummer, LAYLA, but she quickly becomes their permanent drummer for their next albums. layla (stylized in all caps) is the stage name of susie sloth-bear, a drummer who first got famous as a model. but she was good, playing as a session drummer across the states.

but the making of their next album with layla is FULL of arguments, and they go on a 5 month hiatus. the hiatus gave them the new material they were looking for, but they struggled to work together in making them. most of the songs on the next album would be mainly played by one individual member. only layla collaborated with the other three. the damage was done, and their 1967 album, fittingly titled "kill the lights," would be their last.

so that was kinda long, huh? i still don't have everything set in stone, but here's a summary probably way longer than you expected. they also all have refs! which are on my toyhouse (link). i would upload them here, and someday i might get around to it, but i dont have the energy to write ids for all of em. so. ill leave it at all this. if anyone has any questions, though, id be happy to answer :o) im still workin out the kinks!
