I asked of them if we would be citizens, of how we would be treated since they’ve spoken only of themselves, and continue so they did, speaking plenty but promising none. So I asked what should happen if we choose to refuse, I asked if they would attack, to which they were quiet, and I ask again if our noncompliance would mean hostility from their emerging empire, if it mean our men and children become slaves and soldiers for their further conquest. And they were then quiet until the painted woman spoke, saying to us that they would let us think, and that they would return. When I asked if they would return peacefully, without sharpened edge in hand, they were finally quiet and soon left our home.“
