Six Times Howl Says Goodbye (And One Time He Says Hello)
[tw: im sad, slight death mention cuz howl visits a grave]
I.
Outside of the Qin’s house, Howl clasps Mateo’s hand and wishes him well. He does not tell Mateo or Ting-Ting just where he is going. Only that he will be out of contact. Only that he will not return. He sees the Curiosity around them both and knows that sooner or later they will figure it out. Both of them are sharp and smart and both of them, perhaps, in another lifetime, Howl would’ve gotten to know better.
With a two fingered salute, he nods and then turns on his heel to leave and does his very best not to think of what-ifs.
This Goodbye is an ember, something that could’ve grown.
II.
Howl goes to his parents’ house for Christmas and when his father answers the door, the man nearly falls over, so great is his surprise. Howl comes with Calcifer on his shoulder and Maggie in tow. His mother does not make prolonged eye contact with either the fire demon or Howl’s daughter, who now towers over him and must duck to enter through the door, but with a tight-lipped smile she asks where Melaenis is.
“Travelling for business,” says Howl and he offers no more information.
Megan is also there, as is her boring husband and her two children, who peer curiously at Howl, knowing him only from photographs and from stories that their mother tells them. Neil asks about the starlit cloak Howl wears, while Mari toddles over and giggles as Calcifer’s flames dance in the air. Howl delights them, plucking their Smiles, their Laughs, the Blush from their cheeks. Megan’s boring husband does not look amused, but later on, Megan reaches for Howl’s hand and tells him she is happy he came.
Christmas dinner is delicious, prepared lovingly by Harold Jenkins, who wears an apron decorated with reindeers and antlers on his head. Hannah says a prayer and reaches for Howl’s hand and holds it tight.
Unlike ten years ago, when Howl leaves this time, he leaves a letter. It does not go into as much detail as the one he left with Belle, but it is an apology of sorts.
His father is awake when he leaves.
“Off already Howl? Won’t you stay for a cuppa?”
Howl, already reaching for his scarf by the door, hesitates, then sets his scarf back on the hook. He sits and takes his tea with two milks and a sugar, watching the sun rise with his father one last time.
This Goodbye comes as a string of Christmas lights, all a warm white. It curls around Howl’s hand and doesn’t want to let go.
III.
Jared Jenkins is buried outside his cottage in the Wastes of Ingary, wild, rugged lands nested between mountain peaks, near a large lake that reflects the stars above.
“This is where we met,” says Calcifer, nestled in the hood of Howl’s cloak.
It is a quiet night, the sky is clear. The starlight reflects on the snow. The lights in the cabin are off, have been off since the day Jared died. Howl still has a key, but he does not go inside.
(Jared will not be there. There will be no fire in the hearth, no books open, no smell of coffee).
This Goodbye is as silver as starlight, but cold to touch. It has a noise, almost like an echo.
IV.
Howl sneaks into Ingary, wearing a paper thin disguise, but if Suliman wants him now, she does not care to greet him. Maybe she knows, Howl thinks, though the more likely answer is that she’s found a new plaything to occupy her. He doesn’t think much of this.
Instead, Howl goes straight away to an address he knows only from letters. He knows she will be home for the holidays. Perhaps he timed this all for that certainty..
To Kiki, he tells the truth as best as he can. For a moment, she is silent. Then she throws her arms around him and pulls him into a tight, fierce hug.
For a moment, Howl thinks she will not let him go. But she does, just as he let her fly off out of Swynlake.
“I won’t say goodbye,” said Howl gently, echoing her own parting words as he handed her a talisman. “We’re both flying off to grander things now, eh?”
This Goodbye is a feather and it floats on its own accord.
V.
Howl and Belle have one last afternoon tea together, this time in his house. Calcifer nestles in the hearth. It is one last memory, for both Howl and for Belle. Something golden and good. They talk about the town, about Opal, about spells, about books and stories, about memories. About the friends they lost along the way. About the past. About the first day they met and the last book Belle has read.
They speak vaguely, scarcely of things to come, but Howl does not make any promises he cannot keep. Neither of them do.
When the time has come for Belle to leave, she lingers in the doorway. Howl does as well. They talk again about Opal, about Maggie, about children growing up so fast.
They had a proper goodbye weeks ago, the weepy one, the one where they said all the things they ought to, all the things they needed to. Now, though, now Howl just wants one last golden and good memory with Belle.
This Goodbye is a chapter closed — but not the book.
VI.
He has to give Swynlake credit — Howl never thought this little town would grow on him as much as it did. The oh-so quaint little town traditions. The scones at Hatter’s. The sunlight dipping on the lake.
But Swynlake is small. Howl is greater than it. From his vantage point now, high above the town, high above the people, he can see that. There is great magic here, but it is of this world. And he and Melaenis have seen what lies beyond.
They were both destined for greater things than sleepy Swynlake. It’s never been more clear than now.
This Goodbye is a key.
(i.)
The runes are drawn, the reagents gathered. The night is cold, crisp, a stillness setting over it, as if the whole town — as if the whole universe — is holding its breath for the next step. Above Howl, there are stars. There are always stars when Howl does something extraordinary.
At the center of the runes, Calcifer blazes brightly. Maggie trots near Howl. (He’s let that snow leopard Mel picked up off into the forest — be free, Calcifer told her, find a new home).
Howl holds his breath too. He’s said his goodbyes (he keeps them in a little sachet tied to his belt, but every other worldly possessions he leaves behind). The only thing left for him is the future. It is what lies beyond, it is the great unknown that he and Mel alone will get to explore.
Maybe he was sad before. Torn about leaving behind the life he cultivated here.
But right now — right now, under the stars, amidst the glowing runes, with the spell almost to completion, the magic reverberating around him, filling him and thrilling him — right now, Howl has never felt more sure of his own future.
He looks at Calcifer and nods and the demon rises his flames. Howl utters an incantation in Welsh, spinning the reagents around him as they feed Calcifer’s flames. The universe, which held its breath just now, takes a sharp inhale, wind coursing through every direction, whipping Howl’s hair around his face.
He shields his eyes, watching as the spell tears through the veil of the universe. There is this step — which he and Mel already accomplished — but there is also the next, the tricky part, the reason Howl waited till the New Year.
A tear is a tear, but Howl needs a specific tear.
He waves his wand and a flurry of reagents spill out of his vials, surrounding the tear just as it forms and widens. It’s a bit of a tracking spell, a bit of a locator, a bit of a love spell, a lot of its own thing. He holds his breath. The tear glows brighter and brighter.
Howl hears something. It calls to him. It beckons.
He takes a step. Another. Maggie follows. Calcifer floats up near him. The tear is so bright, Howl cannot see through it. Does not know if his spell worked, if it lead him to her — but the lure is so intoxicating, the siren call so sweet, that he must step through.
“Took you long enough,” comes a voice, breaking through that sweet melody.
Howl looks up and smiles.
“You’re not easy to find,” says Howl and when he laughs, it echoes through the night. Without a second look back at Swynlake, he steps through the tear.
