So uh. Last night i went to bed at 11:30, which is late for me. (Keep in mind that I can't fall asleep very easily, it takes like at least an hour of my brain being too loud before I pass out.) And then I wake up to some shrill beeping, and it doesn't really sound right but I instinctively reach over to turn off my alarm.
The way my alarm clock works is it has a sliding bar along the top, and depending on how far you slide it it does different things, and the digital face reflects these changes based on the time and two dots. So first, I slide it away from the alarm setting, but the beeping doesn't stop. In my just-woke-up, sleep-deprived state, I sort of wildly slide it around, and at some point it stops. Satisfied, I bury my face in the pillow to give myself a minute or two to gather myself.
But as I rest, I keep hearing something beeping faintly, but I figure my ears are ringing, which happens often enough. I check the time, and my alarm clock says it's still 5:45, when it's supposed to go off. It hasn't even been a minute. I close my eyes for a little bit longer. When I check the time again? Still 5:45. Confused, I slide the bar. That was the setting to say when I want my alarm to go off. The actual clock setting says 1:17. Confused, I stare at my alarm for a moment, still hearing what sounds like a faint ringing in my ear.
It is at this point that my aunt knocks on my door. I stumble out of bed and unlock the door, and the ringing is no longer muffled by the door.
MY HOUSE'S FIRE ALARM WAS GOING OFF.
There was no actual fire, thank god, but emergency dispatchers called us and I had to tell them in clumsy just-woke-up Spanish (my family must have answered them first, and they don't speak much English) that they didn't have to dispatch a truck.
My little brother also thought it was his alarm, but didn't believe my family when they told him it was the fire alarm. My grandma slept through all of this.
And then I had to try to fall asleep again.
