Poor communication skills can disrupt creative flows. No matter how great your idea is, if you are unable to communicate it to others in a way that they can understand or picture what you are trying to say or do, your idea might never get to fly. I used to get so frustrated when I have an image of something I want in my mind and I try and communicate it to others on my team and they didn’t get it. It never occurred to me that I was not painting a clear enough picture so my ideas were ambiguous. Now, when ever I get any idea I want to implement, I break down the creative process in my head and then I articulate it step by step and I find that people grasp the concepts quicker and more accurately. As leaders, entrepreneurs and business owners, we must invest in developing our communication skills so that they are effective and clear enough to keep driving our vision and innovative ideas forward. Stop looking for followers and focus on engagement. What does it profit a brand to have hundreds of thousands of followers and have less than 1% of those followers engage or buy what the brand offers as products and services? Thanks to my mentor, Dr Sam Ikoku @dr_samikoku, I have long learnt the foolishness of pursuing the wrong things on my quest to building visibility and authority in my niche. It is very tempting to want to play the numbers game and show everyone that you have a large follower base. I was tempted to but I thanks to sound advice and encouragement from the people in my inner circle, I focused on what was more important. I chose to be creative, deliver value excellently, show up consistently, engage and connect on a deeper level with the people who showed interest in my work and my content and constantly keep innovating. 3 years later, I have results to back up what I have been focusing my time and energy on and people are sitting up and taking notice. There is no microwave formula to build something successful that will be sustainable. Any one who tells you that is lying to you. You have to show up and DO THE WORK even if we give you all the steps on a platter of gold. Summary; Followership building is good. Engagement is better. Creating content is good. I love reading. From the moment I could read, I always had my face in a book especially mystery books and teen romance till I outgrew that phase. I want us to bring back the reading culture especially for the benefits of our younger ones who have a higher affinity for video games and chatting on their phones. I suspect a lot of adults done read much too because they are always “too busy”. Watch the video and I hope you will be inspired to read a book a month at the very least. Change is good. Sometimes we don’t like it because it makes us uncomfortable. Sometimes we are too emotionally attached to what is familiar so we resist change. But in order to grow, innovate and evolve, sometimes have to change to fit in with the upgraded and higher version of you. My old logo was designed by me when I was so eager to get started on my life coaching journey 3 years ago. I had no graphic designing background but I knew what I wanted my logo to represent; me helping others to grow, and be more confident in who they are as Royalty and live an abundant life,phenomenally. So I choose the Star of David as the signet for the logo, purple, white and gold for what they represent and created something I felt represented me and my message. Now, my fanstastic graphic design team created an updated, elegant and powerful logo that represents the Madame Merola of 2020. I love it. What do you think? It is humbling to be appreciated for delivering value to others based on something that has absolutely nothing to do with money. Today, I had the opportunity to be a facilitator to a group of young brilliant minds on the @ilab.ng platform. I taught them on “COMMUNICATION AS A TOOL FOR FOSTERING BRANDS”. The host of this initiative, Itofa Ivarah @itofaivarah is a young man I have know for a couple of years and honestly, I knew he was going to grow up to be the exceptional young man he is today. Itofa has always possessed a gift to speak and lead and I saw it in him as a young teenager. He recognized it too, and unlike many that take their gifts for granted, he has spent years developing and deploying this gift of his. He didn’t sit back and wait for opportunities to come to him, he has been proactive as an undergraduate to create platforms and initiatives that would put a lot of us older people to shame. Itofa is a man of immense value. Anyone who hires him or works with him would be more than pleased because he has the right attitude as well the competence to back up what is needed of him. People, please don’t limit yourself to how much MONEY you have. Do you know there are lots of people with money but little value to offer others? Money is not the correct barometer of how valuable and gifted you are. Ask a lot of people that are super successful now how much money they had in the beginning and middle of their career. Keep working and investing in yourself. Use your strengths to your advantage. Effective communicators are busier than most in this pandemic because their skill set is of immense value and greatly needed. I had been keenly interested in the skills that have remained relevant over the course of 100 years with all the changes that have occurred over time. It was interesting to note that communication skills has been in the top three essential skills regardless of what era. Why people didn’t invest in improving their communication skills as part of their personal development training is puzzling to me? I know many times we say that we would rather place more value on CHARACTER over COMPETENCE because you can train someone with great character to be more competent at what they do. Let me add another C word into the mix when considering who to hire/work with. COMMUNICATION SKILLS can be learnt but you will find it a lot easier to work with someone who has effective communication skills. Writing well and speaking well is a MUST NOW not a NICE TO HAVE. Do yourself a favour and take an Effective Communication Masterclass this lockdown/quarantine season and sharpen your communication skills so that you can include it on your resume and make your more employable.
