This article has some really interesting takes on I May Destroy You, one of the absolute best shows I've watched this year. IMDY tackles so many big issues with an incredible level of nuance, where you're constantly forced to re-evaluate your opinions of all the characters as their arcs play out, to an extent I've never really seen before. It is by turns brilliantly incisive, funny, heart-wrenching and heart-warming, and is just all-round phenomenally well written -- basically, Michaela Cole is a genius. Content warning for sexual assault/rape, drug use and racism, and I'd definitely recommend spacing out your viewing because it is heavy material (it came out as two episodes a week, which worked really well), but I can't recommend watching it strongly enough.

episode nine of ‘i may destroy you’ got me........ feeling some kind of way. seeing arabella using social media is such a hungry, obsessive way. she is so convinced she NEEDS to be engaged with it every day because she’s “punishing” the people who are hurting others but... the snippets they include that show the toll it’s taking her on her mental health. her therapist’s words brought tears to my eyes. “can you delete it?” and honestly, seeing her go from “let’s doxx them”, utter mania and frantic, desperate, terrifying heights of positioning herself as a saviour whilst this obsession eats away at her brain... then she deletes it all? she deletes all her apps. so poignant as michaela coel herself deleted all the apps ages ago as she said it sapped her creativity. i honestly relate so much. i wrote about this recently on medium, the push-and-pull of the internet and particularly social media. as always, IMDY gets it. no one is doing it like her. her writing is so true, so sharp, so painful. i can’t get over how raw the episode was, it really brought things home to me. much to think about. wow. beautiful. incredible. horrible. fantastic.
