I spent a lot of time at my grandmothers house as a child. She was fearless in my eyes. She gave birth naturally to 13 children! Can you say "Super Mom?" My grandmother loved Jesus. How did I know? Well, she said she loved Him. She sang praises to Him. She lifted her hands in praise. She thanked Him. She cried out to Him. She loved others. She even disciplined us. Wait hold up? Discipling is love? Absolutely! One day at the tender age of about 5 I'm guessing, I walked my sassy self into my grandmothers kitchen and opened the refrigerator door. While searching vigorously for something I couldn't find when all of a sudden I shouted out, "WHERES THE DAMN BOLOGNA?!" Well, let's just say my grandmother was not very happy with what came from my mouth. She scolded my mother because she figured I had heard it from her. I probably did. But nevertheless, I said it and it was because I was imitating something I had heard. It's no surprise that children imitate others. We are born sinners and no one has to teach us to do bad things. It's our nature. However, we are commanded as children of God to train our children in the ways of the Lord. Basically we are to imitate Him to our children, in hopes that they too will imitate Christ. But they can't be imitators of Christ apart from Christ. It is from repenting of our sinfulness in response to the good news that Jesus came to die for those sins and making us right with God! Taking the penalty of death and separation from God from us. As a child I knew God loved me and that I would get to be with Him forever because of Jesus! But now what? How ought I live? Would I look the same? Do the same things? I know grandma wasn't always imitating God. Someone taught her the ways of the Lord too. So what happens when we put our faith and trust in Christ? Is their a purpose other than to die and go to heaven? That question lingered in my mind as a youth. Even though I now know the answer, I often wonder if other believers are pondering the same question. The Bible, God's very words, His very own wisdom tells us clearly how we ought to live. Not to gain His love or acceptance but as a result of that love and acceptance. The whole chapter of Ephesians gives us a great description of how we should live as children of God, as saints, as chosen ones... yes, all those adjectives to describe us! Ephesians 5:1-5 reads," “Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.” The whole chapter is great but I love these because it specifically says "be imitators of God". Sometimes as Christians we think we should be imitating others.. and even base our "goodness" off of what others say is good. Even worse we think we are better than others because we don't do the "bad" things other Christians do. Well, others aren't the standard. It says imitate God. Not that you are God but that you are His and you should be LIKE Him. The apostle Paul admonishes the church in Corinth to imitate him as he imitated Christ. Paul was their Bible. He described himself as the father of the gospel for them. As a believer of the gospel, we too are imitators of Christ. Others that hear our claim as children of God, Christians, are looking to see if our profession looks like it should. While we are still in the flesh, we will fall short, or even stumble in many ways. However, we are never told that is an excuse not to continue to imitate Christ in our lives! We are even told if our lives do not look like Christ we should question whether we are truly in the faith! So, who are we imitating? Do we live a life that backs up our profession? I have always loved these verses from the song "Glorious Day" Living, He loved me Dying, He saved me Buried, He carried my sins far away Rising, He justified freely forever One day He's coming Oh glorious day, oh glorious day! Let us remember how He opened our eyes, allowed us to repent of our former lifestyle and turn to Him for forgiveness and freedom from condemnation. I pray that for all those who have trusted in Jesus saving power that they also rely on that power to live a life that points the lost to Christ! Amen!
