Chinese Couplets – with filmmaker Felicia Lowe

Part memoir, part history, part investigation, Chinese Couplets is the filmmaker’s search for answers about her mother’s emigration to America during the Chinese Exclusion era. The film reveals the often painful price paid by immigrants who abandoned their personal identity, the burden of silence they passed on to their off spring and the inter-generational strife between immigrants and their American born children.

Felicia Lowe is an award-winning independent television producer, director, and writer with more than 35 years of production experience. Lowe received an EMMY for Best Cultural Documentary for Chinatown: The Hidden Cities of San Francisco. The lively hour-long piece on the history of San Francisco’s oldest neighborhood has been broadcast numerous times on PBS.

The immigrant story of my people is complicated, and evolving. The question of who does and doesn’t belong here is complicated and evolving. America isn’t ‘a nation of immigrants.’ It’s a nation built on contradiction. It’s a nation built on the best and worst of what the world has to offer. A nation built on the concept of freedom—attained through genocide and slavery. And despite being a country that has historically embraced some of our worst impulses. I still have hope that we can begin to move towards our best.

…refugees are often compelled to leave by violent circumstance. They’re really still attached to wherever they came from. So, that’s where I think refugees oftentimes have a hard time adjusting, at least psychologically. They may adjust culturally and economically, but, psychologically, half of them is still somewhere else.

Asian American Day Laborers Are A Visible Sign of Poverty

Asian Americans have the highest rate of poverty than any other group in the Big Apple, according to New York City.

27 percent of New York City’s Asian American population lives in poverty. Yet only 1 percent of the state funding goes to combat that poverty. Adult literacy programs are desperately needed, but only a minuscule percentage of the population gets it.

But according to white people, Asian people are the richest people in the world! Right. See what happens when white America spreads false information? Actual, poor Asian Americans (and Asian immigrants) can’t get the financial help or assistance they need to survive. These Asian folks need help and currently, they will do anything just to make something. I’m not sure how to help myself but it says they need funding for adult programs.

Southeast Asian Group Opposes Trump’s Executive Order, Stands ‘Proud As Refugees’

Southeast Asia Resource Action Center (SEARAC), a D.C.-based nonprofit, recently called on people to support all refugees in defiance of Trump‘s order which not only bans visitors from several Muslim-majority countries, but also blocks Syrian refugees from entering the country.

“As Southeast Asian Americans, we stand proud as refugees, as children of refugees, and as Americans to denounce these Executive Orders that attack, not protect, the very best of our country’s values,” the group said in a press release, just before the action was even signed.

When President Jimmy Carter doubled the number of Indochinese refugees the U.S. had agreed to accept in 1979, about 62 percent of Americans opposed the move. Now, about 51 percent oppose accepting Syrian refugees into the country, a Quinnipiac University poll released in December revealed.

Indian American Leaders Come Out Strongly Against Trump Travel Ban

“People in my district are terrified. Anyone who defends this ban will be on the wrong side of history,” she said. [Pramila] Jayapal described the chaos at Seattle airport on the weekend where she helped legitimate travelers and immigrants. In one case, she said they had to literally stop a plane from taking off to rescue a Yemeni man who was being deported. “I know what it’s like to fight for citizenship, to be denied a room because of the colour of my skin,” Jayapal said. The early-morning press conference against Trump’s executive order was the first expression by the 3.2 million-strong Indian American community that largely supports the Democratic Party.
