Fave book of Feb: Beloved
Every month this year I'd like to share my very favorite books with you! February is for Toni Morrison's Beloved. A hauntingly beautiful ghost story that has amazingly lush storytelling. It's one of the few books I've had to sit down during my first reading because it was so heavy on my heart, if I didn't take a break it may burst. It was in the middle of a high school biology class, too, so clearly my priorities were straight.
It was actually the movie of this that introduced me; a family member worked at the theater the day it came out and called to tell me that all the old white people were leaving within the first few minutes of the movie, blood drained from their faces. They said the movie was unchristian-like and demanded their money back. Naturally, I went up the same day and saw it immediately. Has there ever been a movie with as good an opener as Beloved? This is such a faithful book adaptation, as well. From the wallpaper and tiny details, this movie was made with love and care and truly stands up. I bought the book the same week and fell in love. What a true work of art this story is. How lucky I was to find this book so early in life! A feat in writing and a real inspiration for me. Thank you, Toni Morrison.
