Hiatus Fic-A-Thon #12 - Sobering Confessions
Hey, last post from Missouri for a while! I managed to scramble and finish this in between work and packing and moving. It’s not very long, but I hope it’s okay as it’s the best I could do under these circumstances.
Thanks again to @thebookjumper for hosting @olicityhiatusficathon.
Sobering Confessions
Smoke and Mirrors series Prompt: Impaired judgment
When Oliver walks into base, it’s to the sound of giggles. His eyebrows knit together at the sound, staring at the room that Felicity and Sara have redecorated over the last week. Where there were only workbenches and the remains of a factory, there is now a sofa, a television, and a coffee table. It’s taken Felicity just a week to make this feel like home.
Home. He wonders if he’ll ever be able to see his again.
When walks into the room, it’s to find Sara draped over the couch with a blonde, causing him to shake his head. They’re watching some sort of reality show, and there are a few wine glasses and bottles of beer scattered across the coffee table.
Figuring that if Sara brought her down here, the unfamiliar blonde probably knows about their living situation, he only calls, “Hey, have you seen Felicity?”

A study of American football players' brains has found that 99% of professional NFL athletes tested had a disease associated with head injuries. The report published in the Journal of the American Medical Association studied 202 deceased players - 111 of them from the NFL. All but one former National Football League player were found to have chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Many of the brains were donated specifically by families who had suspected that their loved ones were suffering from CTE, which researchers believe is caused by repeated blows to the head. The neurodegenerative brain disease CTE is typically found in people who have suffered repeated blows to the head, studies have found. It causes a build-up of so-called tau proteins which can disable neuro-pathways and cause memory loss, impaired judgment, confusion and a variety of other mental health issues. Of the 202 total players, 87% were found to have traces of CTE. It was also found in 48 of 53 college players and three of the 14 high school players.

Impaired Judgement
it seems as if my judgement is already impaired before I even touch a single fucking glass because damn, I thought we would last
I thought you cared, I thought you loved me, I thought you were in love with me, but there’s just things you can’t see it just seems I was just lost in who I wanted us to be trust me, believe me, when I say that there’s no fucking way that you ever fully left my mind you may be evanescent, but I’m still remenscing
you may be distant, but my love is resistant you may be cold, but I’ve been dying for a hand to hold

Profiles in Dementia: Ronald Reagan (1911 – 2004)
For reasons that I cannot logically remotely fathom, except that perhaps we humans are highly susceptible to creating sanitized and palatable versions of our recollections of “the good old days,” which in fact were never as good as we remember them to be and may have been downright horrible, United States President Ronald Reagan is continually held up as a hero and a paragon of virtue, wisdom,…
