ireland is a country that was colonised, oppressed & genocided and had its people treated as subhuman savages for our language, culture, religion, etc, as well as having a twenty nine year terrorism crisis that stemmed from extreme sectarian discrimination, police brutality, suppression & centuries of unionist protestant supremacy. very similarly to many, many colonised countries in africa, the middle east & latin america. the ONLY REASON, the ONLY reason we are now one of the wealthiest countries in the world, is not because we are uniquely scrappy or smart or determined or superior, it is because we are white. irish revolutionaries were not braver or cleverer or more moral or more admirable than revolutionaries of colour, we did not go from desperately poor to swimming in money in a matter of decades by our own virtue, we are where we are because of our whiteness and proximity to europe. where would we be if we were a country that america bombed instead of attempted to help end the troubles? where would we be if we were a country unable to join the eu? where would we be if we did not have the means to (however unwillingly) assimilate to british economics? think about how you treat travellers who do not assimilate to this expected ideal of "respectable european". what racial implication is here? why does it matter that they do not fit this polished image of "irish citizen" who appeals to american companies as highly educated and white, as "civilised"? ireland has joined the hegemony of imperial white settler states even if we are not an active participant, even if we commit to supporting colonised peoples (not nearly enough). think critically and acknowledge your privilege as a citizen of europe mwah

the truth is, i've been desensitized to violence since my earliest memories. i remember playing imaginary machine guns with the other kids in first grade or so, to the chagrin of the teachers on yard duty. it wasn't until the last couple of years (two decades later) that i came to understand the horrors of war and death. watching someone open fire should make your jaw drop and cause you to say "what the fuck". seeing someone you don't know die in battle should evoke a feeling of dreadful loss and anger. we should be outraged at the stupidity of a person who attacks another. looking back on the depth of my desensitization and its probable causes (life in the imperial core + no violence at home yet + media glorifying violence) leaves me feeling disgusted and confused and a little hopeless. it took quite a bit to dig me out of that hole. i don't expect everyone to be as deep in it as i was, but those who were, i don't expect them to find their way out either.

Over the past 12 hours, because the president of the United States tweeted about destroying Iran, I've been more stressed than ever in my life. Selfishly worried about the off-chance of nuclear Mutually Assured Destruction and the end of the world, that is. I reflect, not even 2 hours after a tentative ceasefire has been agreed to, that the fear and stress I spent today with isn't even 1% as real or imminent or painful or disruptive as what Iranians, Palestinians, Lebanese people, Syrians, Sudanese people, Cubans, Venezuelans, Ukrainians, or indeed any people outside of the United States Imperial Core have been experiencing for months if not years if not decades.

My hope, I suppose, is that I'm not the only sheltered, privileged person in the imperial core to experience this fear for one's life today, and moreover realize that everyone else in the world has been experiencing something far worse for far longer. That then, maybe finally, the empire will come to a halt as its people stand up and say "No More."

Odds are, though, that basically no one even noticed that our president tweeted anything today; instead, they'll wake up tomorrow to see that he signed a tentative ceasefire and go "oh hey, glad he finally did something good," without realizing that not only did he threaten instant genocide on an entire nation, but also that the ceasefire and peace plan are entirely Iran's idea that he's only taking because just enough people around him in the government said that maybe this was just one step too far.

One can hope, though. One must hope. Certainly, Eventually, even those of us most sheltered from the bombs will see the craters and say "No More."

I just wish it could happen before the next bomber takes off.

i loath the term "Imperial Core" more and more each day.

just say america. or europe. if you mean america or europe. empire is not a white or western fucking concept and there are SO MANY imperial powers that fall far outside of that "core"
