I was initially struck by how you illustrated Renn’s relationship with the sea, and how her life once spent as a pirate still continues to haunt her. You considered the various events of Renn’s life, and how they ultimately made her the person she is today. Your characterization of her is fantastic, and the tensions between land and sea echo throughout the entire app. I particularly love how you described Renn’s relationship to her mage abilities, and more specifically about what it meant to her to be an air mage specifically. You’ve taken our favorite air mage and truly made her your own! “A sorrow she had not known since her childhood had come back quickly almost as if it was an old friend. A hovering presence waiting to embrace her once more. She had fallen into it along with the rage and despair that accompanied the knowledge that she was once more alone in this world.” We’re so excited to see where you take her!

When I wrote Diara, I was initially drawn to this concept of a girl trapped between two sides of the war, battling between family and the unknown, and I think you definitely captured that in your application. Your plots helped paint a picture of her inner desires, how she longs to be out of the shadows and into the light, but it was your para sample that truly sealed the deal for me. The way you conveyed her relationship with her father told me you’d be the perfect person to bring our beloved advisor to life, and I can’t wait to see her grow on the dash. “Remember, her mother used to say: a daughter is the best thing one can be. But she always felt like more of an offering. A lamb coaxed into the room and ordered to await the wolf. It would have been better if it were a wolf. Something ugly and without familiarity. Something that did not sound like her father, and instead howled at the pale moon outside.” We’re so excited to see where you take her!

When I came up with the concept of imperium, Jinx was one of the first characters to really solidify in my mind. I knew I wanted that concept of warring sisters, one bitter at the other’s success without realizing how unhappy their sibling was, and you nailed that and more with your application. You gave us such an intricate look at why Jinx chose the path she’s currently on, and with each carefully crafted plot point, you came back to the conclusion I tried to weave into her biography--- Jinx will do everything for her family, even if it shatters herself in the process. It made me want to learn more about her and who Jinx truly is, and I can honestly say I trust her in your capable hands.  “ For long, she’s always wanted more, this little buzzing inside of her head that was ever-present but never loud enough to get her to put that in front of those she wants to protect and live for; it’s a sense of adventure, a sense of wanting to belong outside this mould that she created for herself ( even if unknowingly ), a sense of wanting to be more than she is, whether it’s simply a noble woman or an assassin with dried blood underneath her manicured fingers.” We’re so excited to see where you take her!

CONGRATULATIONS, V! YOU’VE BEEN ACCEPTED AS THE ROLE OF ZENO MAXIMUS WITH ARON PIPER AS AN FC.

When I imagined what I wanted in a Zeno application, there were a few qualities I knew I’d look for. An exploration of rage, of his inadequacy, and what this all means now that he’s been placed on the throne. V, you absolutely nailed all of this— and more! The way your plots touched on his external and internal conflicts, and how your writing sample captured who Zeno was in action all made for a spectacular and exciting application. “Rhythmic yet relentless, again and again and again as the frustration of inadequacy builds and the sweat on his palms does little to stabilise his grip on the sword. The muscles from his shoulders to his lower back burn from exertion, but he’s used to that. The metallic tang of blood fills his mouth until it makes him nauseous, but he’s used to that too. Zeno has long lost count of the scars that line the insides of his cheeks, or the mornings on which he wakes up near incapable of movement. Failure isn’t an option, and weakness is a luxury he cannot afford.” We’re so excited to see where you take him!

For starters, R, wow! I’m truly amazed by your application, and how spectacularly you nailed the characterization of our fearless commander. Valerian is a complex character, with equally as complex motivations, and you outlined it all so wonderfully in your application. Her growth since her days in the arena, plus the toll her line of work has taken on her both physically, and mentally, were both qualities of your application that I especially loved. All the little details about Valerian were also a treat to read! ““Commander Furia.” A different soldier this time, this was the life of a person in charge, someone was always seeking their time. “Yes?” Valerian answered gently. She wasn’t a person that shouted anymore, she spoke slowly, quietly sometimes and yet people knew that her words could be equal to poison, they have seen how dangerous and deadly the woman can be and so, she didn’t need to raise her voice to make people listen to her. Her days yelling in arenas are over, now she only speaks volumes so the enormous number of soldiers in her army could hear her.” We’re so excited to see where you take her!

We received two amazing applications for Allegra, but in the end, I kept turning back to yours, Jenna. The way you captured Allegra’s rage, and her calculating, inward nature completely blew me out of the water. You took how Allegra feels about Zeno, and about her father, and the dynamics she has with both of them far beyond what I could’ve ever imagined when I initially wrote the skeleton. Your plots were so interesting, and really brought the sort of energy we were looking for in an Allegra apper. You truly made her a character of your own. “Zeno did not grow up to be a sweet child, quickly shedding his innocence for twin cruelty. This, you suppose, is one of the few things you have in common – Maximus blood is poison, corrupting even the very best. For better or worse, you both share this blood – it runs thick in your veins, and it has shaped you both into the monsters you are today. You, a monster born of the shadows. He, a monster born of the sunlight. Each equal and opposite in their danger.” We’re so excited to see where you take her!

Congratulations, SARAH! You’ve been accepted as the role of OLIVIAN CONSUS with HALE APPLEMAN as an FC.

Sarah, I couldn’t have written a better Olivian app if I tried. You captured everything I envisioned for Olivian and more. From the way you described his relationships and the ‘misery loves’ company approach he takes to the way he interacts with the world around him, I found myself nodding along and just constantly thinking ‘Yes, this is Olivian.’ My favorite part about the application is how you really gave him true depths that go beyond the skeleton. The way you laid out his potential paths, how he has the capabilities to be more than the disappointment he was raised to believe he was, had me positive that he belonged in your hands. “Search him,” the guard said, motioning towards another man who stepped forward, his rapier held out like Olivian wasn’t completely unarmed and out numbered. He grinned, holding his hands up again only to grasp onto a thick hempen rope that was dropped down suddenly from the rooftops. “Oh, this is unfortunate,” Olivian says, with a sigh. He wrapped his hand in the rope and tugged twice, “it seems as if my escape is here.” We’re so excited to see where you take him!

G, you brought life to our beloved mercenary in ways beyond our comprehension. It is not easy outlining a character with as many names and faces as Lucius, but you far surpassed our expectations in doing so. You took us on a heart wrenching journey into the mercenary’s rise to leadership, and the eventual massacre of his company. You understood Lucius’s layers, you outlined the complexity of his motivations— and how difficult of a position he presently finds himself in. You brought him to life beyond the skeleton— and I adored him more and more at every moment. “You lose everything but your life that day. In the weeks after,  you become the shadow you were always meant to be. The sun leaves you, let night falls around you and you are determined. You tell yourself that you will become what you’ve always been: the darkness out of the corner of one’s eye, the subtle shift in the wind, the slightest rustle of leaves. Once more, you become and embody everything unseen.” We’re so excited to see where you take him!
