Do Not Make the Lawful Unlawful
Sa‘īd b. Manṣūr: Jarīr b. ‘Abd Al-Ḥamīd narrated to us: From Manṣūr [b. Al-Muʿtamir], from Abū Al-Ḍuḥá, from Masrūq who said: ‘Abd Allāh [b. Mas‘ūd] was given a cow‘s udder, so he began to eat from it. He said to the people: “Come closer”, so they did, while a man among them moved backwards. So ʿAbd Allāh asked him: “What is the matter?” He said: “I made udder impermissible for myself.” [ʿAbd Allāh] said: “This is from the steps of the Shayṭān; come closer, and eat, and offer an expiation (Kaffarat Al-Yamīn).” He then recited: {O you who have believed, do not prohibit the good things which Allāh has made lawful to you, and do not transgress. Indeed, Allāh does not like transgressors} [Al-Mā’idah 5:87] حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا جَرِيرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الضُّحَى، عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ قَالَ: أُتِيَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بِضَرْعٍ، فَأَخَذَ يَأْكُلُ مِنْهُ، فَقَالَ لِلْقَوْمِ: «ادْنُوَا»، فَدَنَا الْقَوْمُ وَتَنَحَّى رَجُلٌ مِنْهُمْ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ: «مَا شَأْنُكَ؟»
