FutureMD Recommends: IM Platinum

Today is officially the halfway point in my MD-MBA journey. Our year just finished our list of examinations and practical exam for the first semester in five areas of Internal Medicine. As a tip, I'd like to share my favourite review book for Internal Medicine that made things simple in a span of few hours. (Yes, I had to cram after numerous hours of reviewing for my written exams :p)

I was quite reluctant to share this precious book because of some warning just after the title cover that prevents anyone to publish parts of this book in electronic form, but I guess it's safe since photographs are just snippets of the book. Okay here it goes...

Introducing..the IM Platinum! :) This book is more like those Basic Review Series books for Physiology, but the difference is that reading this little book was like a huge flashback of our small group discussions throughout the semester. The approach to the patient, important formulas to remember and list of possible differentials for different disease aetiologies.

It contains simple instructions on pertinent values to remember when analysing clinical cases, from CBC, Urinalysis etc. just to cover the basics.

The book is very organized, from the most common diseases for Endocrinology, Gastroenterology to some rare diseases. What I like best in the presentation of different diseases is the correlation of each case from one to another. It makes creating a list of differentials easier.

At the end of each chapter are high yield points to remember in every IM subject. It doesn't contain everything but it covers most things in clinical practice and even some information that were asked during the boards over the years.

The awesome thing about this books is that one of our teachers is the Editor of this book. I really should get this book signed by him.

I personally really love this book because it helped me a lot. I have to remind fellow medical students though, let's not depend on short books for studying Internal Medicine if we have the time to read up. Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine is still the best IM book that updates every 2-3 years and contains most answers in clinical cases.
