Playing the egg in Shank was an embarrassing ordeal but Triple Threat got through it, giving her all to the role even though she hated it so much. She was an actress, it was what she had to do. The production was greater than just her after all. Besides, she’d surely get better roles later down the road.
That’s exactly what TT sought out after Shank had run its course. She came across an off-Bridleway production of Haythers and jumped at the chance to try something new. It was a much edgier, darker show but she quite liked it; it was a chance to expand her range. So naturally she auditioned for the lead role of Vereinica.
Honestly, with the feelings TT was going through after the last show, playing such an angsty lead would be almost cathartic. Vereinica, too, just wanted to fit in.
But once again, she didn’t get the lead. Instead she got the role of Vereinica’s best friend, Maretha.
Okay, Maretha was a more major character than the egg. But she was also the one who got left behind, who bore the brunt of the other characters’ bullying. As Maretha, TT would have to stand there and listen to the other characters call her a pig. A pig!
Triple Threat stared into the dressing room mirror, contemplating her costume before putting it on for rehearsal. She almost dreaded putting it on. This wasn’t her at all, this wasn’t how she wanted to be treated.
“Hurry up, Triple! We’re waiting for you!”
Her castmate Lovestrung Sonnet called out, her voice biting with irritation and anything but lovestrung.
She made to slip on the sweater, not exactly hurrying so she wouldn’t have to go on stage faster than she had to.
“I’m sorry, I guess I’m just having a hard time getting into this role. I’m not really picky but I don’t know...I just tried really hard to make my audition stronger. Maretha’s more awkward. And the butt of a lot of the bad stuff...”
“The director knew what he was doing, he clearly saw differently. You’re just like Maretha. You just don’t have the bold streak in you, I guess.”
Lovestrung brushed her off, flipping her hair smugly.
Her other castmate, Sleepy Hollow, spoke up.
“Someone has to get the bad role. Everyone in this show is a piece of shit anyway, so yours isn’t as bad as you’re making it out to be. If you didn’t like it you should have bowed out at the beginning instead of complaining right before dress rehearsal.”
“Yeah, like...if you’ve got a bone to pick, work on your timing.”
Lovestrung rolled her eyes.
The two castmates were playing awful ponies in the show but they might as well have been their characters in the flesh as they ganged up on TT. Of course there wasn’t anything they could do now, TT knew this, but they wouldn’t even listen to her confiding in them. That was all she wanted.
Once they finished getting dressed they walked out after the rest of the cast, leaving TT alone to dress herself.
“We’re out here when you’re finally ready. Don’t get stuck in the door on your way out.”
